Hi all....posting for a friend, he has a 300tdi recently rebuild new liners, rings, cylinder head, valve seals.....started smoking found the turbocharger to be at fault.....bought one new from rimmer Bros not a genuine(aftermarket)....issue now is its still blowing blue smoke.....on idle no smoke whatsoever, on revs only slight black smoke, in drive idling no smoke but driving blue smoke accompanied by burning oil scent...any advice is welcome

Black smoke on revving/acceleration is normal.

The blue smoke sounds like either bad fuel/air mix, or oil getting in somewhere. Is it deffo blue, or does it have a white tinge to it?

Might seem obvious, but has he run a decent fuel cleaner through the system (not the Halfrauds stuff - the ones the trade use). I had to run two lots through my 200TDi to clear bluish/white smoke from an inefficient injector.

Also, check all the intake pipes for cracks. Also are the turbo seals sound?

Injector pump serviced and injector tip changed in one.... I will pass the info to him...turbocharger seal should be good as its a new turbocharger....how can I check the seal?

How many miles since new turbo fitted? If not many it may just be burning the oil off from inside the exhaust that found it's way in there after turbo failed.

Hasn't been much miles
Okay so it could be residual oil from pre-turbo replacement, unlikely to be a seal if it's a new turbo, you say the injection system is all new, that leaves pipes - check em all - even a slight crack or perished section can fail under suction/blowing and screw with your mixture. My BH's TDCi did exactly this, and my mate diagnosed the problem straight away, based on his experience with his TD5 Fender

All hoses changed also....mostly because of my previous experience he bought new ones....and also because of the age of his old ones

Okay - onbvious question none of us thought to ask - is it losing power when it smokes?

The person who serviced the injector pump had to increase the fueling from the main screw to get power as it was extremely lazy

Sounds like residual oil to me then - run it for a while and see if t cleans itself up - run some diesel system cleaner through like I said a few posts ago, and eliminate the easy fix before looking for more serious issues.

Hey all...as a follow up to this thread...I removed the pump a second time and took it back to the specialist for some readjustment when we got it back smoke was alot less....however the engine now has no power on hills....on the road it's pulls alright...by land rover. Standards. Now I myself had encountered this same issue when I had my pump done by said specialist....my question now is what could've caused this lack in power. I am under the assumption it's something to do with the pump after being repaired....because both vehicles worked fine before. Thanks in advance

Seems the problem might be the specialist.loss of power under load means under fuelling - seems all he's done is drop the fuel output, which would reduce the smoke somewhat. I still think the root problem is you're not burning efficiently - either due to an injector problem or a dirty system.

Well the injectors were redone and only one tip was found to be bad....when he did my pump I experienced similar symptoms and I changed my complete injectors for new ones....with the same problem....I don't know why but I suspect pump timing....
