I recently had to have my Freelander put into the Auto Electricians as my alternator blew. The cause of this was an oil leak, which they suspected had come from the Power Steering.

The electricans found no leakage at all and replaced my alternator, last Friday. I popped the bonnet this morning to find a slight coating of oil on the alternator at the electrical connection end.

After a quick inspection, I think I have found the source of the problem. The hose which is connected to the box on top of the engine, is really saturated with an oil like substance. This hose has been touching the screw mount, which has slightly split the hose.

I'm going to replace this hose, but I'm wondering what else i should be doing at this point?

The car has done over 100k and I'm not sure when the last service was carried out.

Should I change the oil filters etc, along with this hose? If so, can someone point me in the direction of a how to guide? I tried to download the rave cd, but had no luck.

Also, when I give the engine some rev's now, there is a slight mis-fire about 3000 revs. At start up I have a small cloud of blue smoke.

Are all these faults related? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

It's common for that intercooler pipe to wear through on that screw or split with old age .
Best to replace that one & the 90 degree one at EGR , Also check and clean out EGR valve while your at it , You can also deactivate the EGR by blocking the vacuum hose . Also check the engine breather filter and replace with the BMW part if you can ?
There is loads of post on here on these subjects !

you do not say which freelander if you have a td4 then put a plastic bag over the alternator when you do a oil filter change as the alternator is right below it,this may have been the problem

when you replace the intercooler hose, cut a section off the old one and wrap it round the new one where it wears on the screw so you're not doing the same in a few months

Quick update for you guys.

Fitted new hose and took your advice Optimus. Cut part of the old pipe, cleaned it using industrial solvent at work, which is specifically used for removing oil contaminants, placed it with precision over the screw bricked....and it works a treat!

Now do I block off the Valve that everyone here raves about or do I leave it?
