hi all.i hope someone can help.my disco 300tdi just started bloowing loads of black smoke from the exhaust and lost power,i pulled over and the engine revved and didnt want to stop when i turned it off,i had to stall it quickly.i disconnected the pipe between the intercooler and inlet manifold and managed to get her started and crawled home, still lacking power and blowing black smoke if i gave it a little bit of throttle.when i got home i reconnected the pipe but its blown oil through the intercooler.i tried running her and she is still smoking and im getting a noise like ive got a dump valve, its like the turbo is suddenly blowing pressure but not got much boost.is my turbo knackered?thanks all

If its blown a lot of oil through the cooler i would say the turbo is dead and you were a lucky bunny to stop it in time.
Give the turbo vane s wiggle anything more than a smidgen of play means it had it.

thanks for that.i gave the turbo impellor a wiggle and it is indeed knackered.ive just collected another turbo and intercooler so will fit them tomorrow.thanks for the help

Dont throw the old cooler out, just wash it out with petrol and e bay it.

i fitted another turbo and intercooler and all was well for a couple of days, then it started to smoke, this time it was blue and getting worse.i took the oil filler cap off and she seems to be breathing very heavily, smoke was chuffing out of the filler.looks like rings gone.ive just picked another engine up,going to start the swap tomorrow

swapped the engine and all is well at the moment other than i cant get the oil warning light to work.i want to fit a oil pressure guage instead.im told i want a capilary one.any ideas where i might get one to suit my disco?

no you dont you want electric pressure switch if you must but get light working no fun driving watching oil guage

Fitted a TIM oil pressure gauge to my 300 TDi but used a t-piece adaptor from Demon Tweeks so I could still have the oil pressure light working as well

i just bought a tim oil pressure guage and it came with the t piece.ive fitted it without for now but will get a new switch and then fit the t piece.thanks for all the advice

Hi all Hope someone can help me? My 300tdi engine gave up on me on M6 a few weeks ago on route from glasgow to london. at first i thought it was just a case of head gasket failure and this was also diagnosed by the 2 AA men that turned up however i thought it was strange as i had only been doing 65mph as not wanting to push it to hard and the temparature gauge was still only halfway i had put some fuel cleaning addertive in before i left and hope its not linked to this as theres still half a tank in it, Anyway when i took the head off number 2 piston had corroded so badly half of it had welded itself to the valves and when i took the the turbo to airbox pipe off oil poured out of it, the inlet and pipes were also caked in black sludge. ive now fitted another engine but cant get it to start. my brother looked at the turbo while it was off and pointed out how much play was in the impellor however after the initial expense of the engine i hoped it might be ok but after reading the threads on here im starting to think otherwise should i give up until i can get a turbo? or can i at least get it started to check it runs?, at mo its pumping exhaust fumes out of the snorkal when attempting to start but ive been told this is due to the timing being out as i had to swop over the diesel pumps due to different wiring any help and advise is gratefully received. Cheers Steve

Your engine should still fire up, the turbo wont even come into play until the throttle gets opened. However, sort out the timing before anything else!
