My astra 1.7 diesel Estate is giving out black smoke when I gun it in low
gear, am i having serious trouble or is it easily remedied. Its done
120.000 mls and apart from the smoke and using a little more fuel than it
should it runs like a dream.
any ideas anyone.

Not helpful, but I've never heard from an Astra 4x4. Any details?
Btw, Opel/GM diesels are build to be bad. No good expereince with them.

Try replacing the air filter first.

tried changing the air filter doesn't help.

Try a diesel additive, like Dr. Diesel, etc., which
addresses black smoke (resultant from paraffin separation)
during moderate-to-hard acceleration. I've had very good
results with this product on our '81 MB 300D (NA) and '86
Sub 6.2NA. Haven't had much need for it on our '98 Tahoe
6.5TD -- the turbo appears to help quite a bit with the
black smoke during acceleration. Good luck.

From my years of driving a semi and also driving a Buick diesel, the black
smoke is unburnt fuel, if there is a adjustment on your fuel pump you can
turn it down a little some cars may not have any adjustment. When I drove
a semi there was a saying that "black smoke ment power". The only thing
the smoke is hurting is your billfold. Hope this helps.

Just picked up a few bottles of Redline diesel additive at
our local Strauss Auto for $3 each, sells for $4.99 at
AutoZone. Good stuff, too. You may want to try increasing
the concentration of diesel injector cleaner (add to fuel
tank) for a tank or two -- if the spray pattern isn't fine
enough, that would also cause black smoke under load. Good
luck.

This is in the ball park but I am think that you pump may be out of
time too because if fuel is inject a few degrees late it will not burn
completely either and mpg will decrease as well. No bottle of aditives
is going to help your problem, save your money. It needs more than
that as you need to get the injector pump checked out.
