whilst checking the front brakes on my 90TDi I thought I would have a look behind the plastic cap on the end of the hub. Wish I hadn't, the cap was about 1/4 full of black oil and oil was slowly seeping from the centre (threaded) hole. I checked the other side and that was just the same? is this normal?

no, what you probably got is old brake fluid. you'll need to do a complete fluid change . the reason the nipples are leaking might just be because they int tight enough or it could be that they are corroded. while yer at it check the rest of yer brakes fer wear and other leaks

oooo! so i see.. must had a moment there and missed that bit.. just see the 'checkin brakes bit ' and jumped reet in

Sounds like the Hub seals have gone. that or there's pressure built up in the diff and it's forcing the oil ppast the seals.

check your breathers aint blocked, if they are clear, looks like your going to have to replace the hub oil seals. that oil is ep90 from your axles/diff casing.

drain the axle, replace seals, fill axle back up.

Probably. cos when you take the seals out the oil is gonna leak out. I think. Possibly.

There are seals at the end of the axle before the swivel housing and in the hub. If there's oil in the swivel not grease then it could be either seal if theres grease in the swivel then it's both seals. If it's just the hub seals the diff dunt need draining if its the halfshaft seal the hub will need draining. If oil int leaking passed the swivel seal or out the end of the driving member just make sure the diff is topped up an ferget about it till you've time or the swivel starts leaking.

Int there only one seal on either side of the front axle? I'm sure there is on mine. Deff two on either side on the back axle. Cos I did em.

There's a seal on the half shaft at the end of the axle and one in the hub. spose it's easier to say one either side of the swivel. So you've got the axle and diff with EP 90 in then yer swivel with EP90 or grease, then yer wheel bearings with grease.
