1990 LR 110 Hi Cap

On cold starting I get black smoke for about 20 seconds then blue smoke and then clears when I drive off. Is this normal or is there any fuel additive to cure this prior to MOT?
 
it's normal to get a puff of black smoke on startup - has the IP been tweaked ?

just add a quarter tank of SVO and get the engine properly hot before the test and it'll be fine

be thankful that it starts - just add a quarter tank of SVO and get the engine properly hot before the test and it'll fly through the test :)
 
Black smoke is a good sign on startup. it shows that the injection pump is over fueling the engine (which it needs to do in order to fire up and crank), the black smoke representing totally burnt fuel particles. White smoke, or 'clag' is also common, but this is usually the case when the injection pump over fuels on startup, but not all of the fuel is burned. Blue smoke would point to oil being burned, which they all do to some extent. It may be oil seeping down the valve stems into the cylinder, or it may just be drawing oil in through the air intake. Have a look in your air filter box. Is there any oil? The paper filter element should be dry and clean white (ideally). If there's any sign of oil, swap it and clean the filter box. The cyclone breather may also need cleaning out. that's the little black cylindrical catch tank that separates oil from 'blow by' before it is re-directed back through your air intake.

IP = Injection Pump which supplies the fuel at pressure to the injectors at the right time (a bit like a distributor does for the sparks on a petrol engine).

SVO = Straight Vegetable Oil (from your kitchen cupboard, local supermarket, or cash and carry)

V8 = Not relevant
 
One other thing is make sure shes up to temp befor taking it there oil temp at least 60 degrees ( thats if you have your MOT check as soon as you arrive ) . smoke limt it 3,00 .
 
I always make sure the engine is nice and hot, and arrive a few mins late so that it is not sitting around for a long time :) - otherwise they would never be able to start the thing up :)
 
Took mine for test a couple of weeks ago (300 Tdi), failed on the emmissions to begin with, and the very nice tester bloke just said "go for a blast up the bypass, and I'll test it again when you get back". So 10 mins later goes back to garage with loverly warm engine and it flew through the test Happy days indeed.:D:D:D:D:D
