I use a roof rack - I dont like those bike racks that go on the back of vehicles if you have oversize frame or suspension the fastenings tend to be either in the wrong place or too short.
Plus the rear mounted things have a finite number of spaces - with a roof rack the sky's the limit as well as the bar thing at car park entrances

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Slobs mechanics cleavage would make a good bike rack.

I wouldn't risk a bike rack on the back door, too flimsy, I have a new door because the old one basicly tore itself apart while carrying the spare wheel, so if it can't take a spare wheel I would not be to sure about then strapping bikes onto that.

I have a roof rack for mine, and when I want to carry bikes (and I say bikes because you can easiy throw a few in the back as it is) I put those things on that, you put the saddle in one side and hook the handlebar on the other and volia you have a bike 10feet in the air!

Depends on the bike. I went out with a bike once and had to pay a visit to the clinic. And she drank more than a leaky gearbox.

i could be wrong here but i think a bike weights a tad less than a spare

He said its a spare wheel mount rack he wants, I am guessing its one that sits over the top and straps round it, so if the door can't even take the spare I am not too sure that putting bikes on top of that are a great idea.

i have a swing away rear carrier for the spare. the bikes are carried on a halfords spare wheel carrier. i replaced the straps with strong ratchet straps (1 to hold the carrier to the spare, 1 round the bikes.) i have also strengthed the struts on the bike carrier. have caried 4x bikes (2 x MTB with sloping top tubes)(2x childs bikes that weight more than the mtbs) no problems what so-ever. the rear door still opens with bikes on. trailer board required.

Jasper, is your wheel carrier the type that opens with the back door or one that is opened first then the back door?
