My discovery 1 is 2 inch lifted with 247/75 r16 .
I currently do not have a jack in case I need to change a tyre ect at the road side .
Ideally I’d like something small enough to leave in the boot and forget about maybe a bottle jack ? Not really after lugging round a 4ft hi lift jack.

What do we recommend

The std D1/2 bottle jack is actually pretty good, best of all iit is two stage, so when you pop a tyre off the rim the jack is short enough to still fit under the axle tube.

Do watch them though, they can l;eak oil and then leave you in trouble at theside of the road!

Luckily I found this out when at home, so I topped it up with oil and now store it upright in a rear locker. But to be on the safe side I travel with a smallish trolley jack too.

There're high lift bottle jacks available, but a bit of modification to the saddle is required to stop it slipping of the axel.

They are very good.

The merc sprinter ones are okay as well, but they are twice as tall as the red land rover version when collapsed.

The red Landy one is designed to fit under the axles. or in the special notches on the radius arms

In my 32 year plus ownership I've never had to use the jack thats suppled with my RR or disco, so with a quick glance at the owners hand book for the D1 it shows the correct position under the axel, perhaps the disco item won't work standing up in a hot engine bay as it does.

I use a trolley jack but I don't have any peeps in the back. I also have the genuine one which is also very good. Not the first time its sank into soft tarmac on a hot day or soft ground, so I have keep a piece of timber to place underneath them.

I didn't know this always on the axle for me.

Mines fits in my rear drawers as I have a battery where the jack used to live.

My 3 ton trolly stays in the garage and just used when taking of the wheels to change brake pads or fluid... i did use it once to replaced the exhaust

Yes normally but I would only use it to change a wheel after a puncture, anything else just roll a trolly jack under the vehicle

I use 4 ramps at the house to get it up higher but my disco is lifted im not sure if the ramps would fin under a standard one??
saves a lot of time jacking the motor up....pic of my defender getting a wash

This is the kit from a Disco 2 and best of luck with trying to get the covers off the locking security wheel nuts with that piece of plastic sh!t.
Ditto getting the wheel nuts off if the steel under the chromy outsides has swollen, you'll get em off but you'll have to fight to get them out of the wrench. Better using the next size up imperial socket 1" 1/16, on a breaker bar.
The wheel chocks are not there in the kit for the Disco 1 but they are cool! Impressed my French mate when I was forced to use them to change a wheel whose rubber was torn to pieces in an accident. Not my fault I hasten to add!

In the disco 1 the jack stands upright which is fine, but in the Disco 2 it lies on its side and I have a feeling that is why my one's seal leaked allowing the oil to leak out so much the jack wouldn't work.
Hence my remark about keeping it in the rear storage bin. The cutouts are there for a purpose they are exactly right and easier to get to as you don't have to reach so far under the wheel. they work fine.

But then an emergency isn't the same as working on it at home, where I like others use one of my 4 trolley jacks!
