I need a V8 bellhousing for an R380 box, and have a TD5 one available as a swap if that's of interest.

Funnily enough James, I was just about to pm you to ask! I'm mating a 380 (L suffix as per your earlier advice) to a Jag V12, and the TD5 housing is quite irregular compared to the V8 so for an easy life (!) I thought switch to the V8 one.

Whilst you've got your khaki thinking cap on, what bits would you suggest, bearing in mind that I'm not really bothered by where the gearbox/lever ends up fore and aft because nothing on this car is in the standard position anyway. The bulkhead and seat positions will be decided when the engine is in. I know I'll need the clutch lever, but would be buying a new slave and thrust bearing after checking how the clutch will work (if adaptor rings and new flywheels are needed) anyway.

i look tomorrow im off to the yard ,but td5 is a considerably longer bell housing than a v8 or tdi, though any input shaft can be fitted, it will be case of looking when box is bolted to engine but id start with the components suited to whichever bellhousing you use

I'd appreciate your looking around tomorrow! Having said what I did about position, length is one thing that I would like to keep down, so that does make the V8 housing more attractive, with the downside being that I will have to change the shaft, again softened by the fact that I ought to give it an overhaul anyway.

I've had a quick look at the book of words and pictures and see that special tools feature in the 380 regularly - does anyone hire them out do you know? And which would you say are the ones that can't easily be 'created'?

You don't really need any special tools for the 380, as long as you have a sturdy gear splitter with long legs you'll be fine.
