Pulled gearbox back to change clutch - fair amount of oil and crap in bell housing.
Old clutch plate has some oil/**** residue round edges but faces clean.
Where might this oil have come from?
Rubber on slave cylinder perished and ripped, changed unit.
Should I just clean out housing and hope for best?

Most likely from gearbox input shaft oil deal, change it before reassemble, also consider changing crankshaft oil seal whilst in bits.

Crankshaft oil seals tend to go often, but could also be input seal on gearbox

If you dont end up changing the seal i used wynns engine stop leak with good results, however its not ideal, im not keen on engine additives

If it is a three bearing then most likely crank seals and or input shaft seal.
Good luck if you change the crank seals on a three bearing, Iv'e never got more than 10 or 12 thousand miles before they leaked again.
