Have D1 1997 ES 5 door.

As a consequence of the below problem, I checked out the bearings.

Just finished the wheel bearings in the front. Nipped them up, they are fine.

GOT a hell of a lot of play in N/s of the disco.
If I really give the wheels a rocking ( I am not a physically small person ) I can hear some clicking and clonking.. and movement that makes me fear driving it...

Driving, I can hear some mechanical clicking... with engine travelling in Neutral and without..

Any Ideas?

Thought about getting a complete diff and swapping it out.

Any advice brilliant...

Thanks guys..

Sounds more like CV's to me. but then there is an awful lot of play in the disco front end. check ball joints and even the dust plate on the brake disc. eliminate everything else before suspecting the worst.

is play in swivel brgs or wheel brgs ,for both you are looking at removing free play without adding preload

I would be checking for wear in the swivel bearings. To do this you need the wheel off the floor. Grab it at 12 and 6 o' clock and check for play. If there is any, it's swivel bearings.

These are shimmed so you may be lucky and just need to remove some shims to take out the play. Because the parts are so cheap I would have some new swivel bearings and pins in stock before you start the job.

Thanks for the responses people, I will consider these carefully and get them into action.

I just tightened a pan hard rod too... it made a diffrence.
