Hi, long time since I posted here. Has anyone got a recommendation for the test and repair of the BCM. 98 P38, 4.6 HSE Jap import. The vehicle stopped (no Dash LED display) restarted moments later but couldn’t select drive (stuck in park) tried several times locking and unlocking and starting but same result. Left it for 10 minutes and it’s cleared the issue. I’m in no doubt the issue will resurface……
 
Stuck in "Park"? How do you mean "Stuck"?
The cable and the XYZ switch tell the Gearbox ECU what you are looking for (P/R/D/3/2/1), if that's FUBAR the box doesn't know what to do perhaps? When in park a locking pawl engages on the flywheel ring I think. Mine had a habit of not finding reverse. Adjusting the cable and mechanism sorted it as the XYZ switch was OK. I would check the state of your battery, the XYZ switch and the cable adjustment before going near the BeCM.
 
Unlikely to be the BECM at fault. Low battery volts, bad earths, lose or corroded 12 volt connections to the BECM or a duff fuse box are all more likely.
The BECM has no effect on gear selection.
 
US models have a shift-interlock solenoid so you have to press the brake pedal to get out of park. Not sure if Jap Imports also have this ?

I thought all autos had some form of interlock?
but then I have not tried moving from P without pushing the brake.

Gents, thank you for all the replies. Battery is around a year old, it was replaced at the same time as the alternator. When I said stuck, the vehicle logic/system wouldn’t allow the lever to be moved. There was nothing displayed on the dash when it shut down. The trip went to zero and the radio lost all settings. As I said, the thing is fine now. What would shut the vehicle down while driving at 30mph then allow a it to start but not be able to get it out of park. Thinking back, it has thrown a few engine disabled warnings in the past weeks. This cleared by locking and unlocking. It hasn’t required an EKU code which is handy as it wasn’t supplied with the vehicle. Do Jap imports use the EKU code?

It's EKA Emergency Key Access not EKU. It's an option that can be turned off on all P38's.
A bad earth from chassis to engine can cause problems as can a duff fuse box, lift the lid and have a sniff, if there is any smell of burning that may be the problem. Corrosion inside the plastic sheath of one of the positive cables from the battery is another known problem. Just because the battery is only a year old does not mean it's OK. What voltage do you have after it has stood overnight?

The unit was refitted earlier this week but now new faults......... suspension raises and lowers on its own accord. It locks and unlocks its self randomly, hazard lights illuminate but don't flash. Windows don't operate. the engine starts and drive can be selected. are these issues BcEM related or is this a Fuse Box/connector issue or an issue caused by removing and reinstalling the BcEM?

Bad connections, faulty fuse box, white connectors at the base of the A post passenger side, or if you are dead unlucky, they have fecked your BECM. Make very sure that all the BECM connectors are free of corrosion and verdigris.
 
That sounds like the connector block behind the kick panel to me. Bet it’s filthy ooh err

More likely to be a dodgy earth. Later models had a second strap put somewhere.

Rick is the man for BECMs at CallRova. He's on here as @Rick-the-Pick - no-one else comes close and chances are they'll send it to him and charge a bit on top.
