Hi Guys.

Anyone know what's going on here. The battery light is lit when the ignition is off. When you turn the key to the first position it goes out then everythings seems as it should be when running. This has just started happening today so I don't if it's draining the battery.

I've had a few flat batteries lately so it's a new battery which is about 3 weeks old. It's an 18 year old 90 and it think it's a 2.5 n/a engine.

Any help apprieciated.

sounds like your alternator may be on the way out. mine did this a few months back. changed the alternator no more stuck light.

do you have a voltmeter? check the batt whilst car isnt running and check it when it is running. sohlud be 12v then 14v respectively. or you have a short/current drain somewhere in the engine electrical system. check the alt and starter for loose wires, split outers anything like that, thats out of place.

Hi Griffdowg

Thanks for the swift reply.
I've checked the battery and it's 12.26 off and 12.54 when running. Not knowing much about the mechanics of cars it does sound sound like the alt to me.

I checked the rear door demister and that has 0.01v when off. Could this indicate a short???

How much did you pay for alt and was it an exchange?

Cheers

Sounds like the alternator is not working correctly.

May I suggest that you take it off, take it apart to see if anything looks amiss and check the rectifier.

Once you're satisfied that it really is the alternator, have a look on ebay and Paddock Spares

Cheers

i got a new alternator for £45 from my local auto electricians. obv its a bit far for you but its worth ringing around you may be surprised at how cheap it is.

failing that you can get em on ebay for bout £50.

keep your eye on ebay. i picked up a 100amp unit for £35 :D id suggest an upgrade if you run lots of eleccy equipment. winch, fridge, 10spot lights etc.

Is it the same alternator for all engines (I doubt it :)). The logbook says it's a 2.5 N/A but I think it's had another engine which could be a different model.

well 1st you need to know what engine you got. then you need to take your alt off and track down some numbers. off the top of me head the lucas part number is a129 i think. i posted it a while back on tre's post about 100+ amp alternators. i believe this will fit the n/a, td and 200tdi. you may have to move the mount around though.

It deffo int a Triumph. See the thingie that the air hose goes into, the ally an rusty iron bit on the opposite end of the big black tubey thing to the air filter, well thats yer turbo.

Lucas part number A127?

that engine dont look like mine (2.5n/a) :) like the twin hooters in the left of the bay though. do they play la coocooratcha? ;)

Cheers Guys

I actually knew it was a TD and somehow I've managed to convince myself that it was an n\a. Just goes to show I've a lot to learn about Land Rovers :)

I haven't ordered the alternator yet as the place I'm going has them in stock. It should be good fun fitting it in the rain and in the dark tomorrow night :(

The hooters were on it when I bought it and unfortunately they don't play a tune. It sounds more like an elephant farting :)

It's the same alternator as fitted to a 1970's Mini (A127)
I got mine at Camberley Auto Factors for £55 plus the old alternator.

The plot thickens and I'm having a sense of humour failure. I've got the new alternator and it looks the same apart from the connections on the back. The old one has a single plug where the new one has one small plug and 3 terminals marked D+ B+ and W. Do I take it back or can someone tell me how to wire the new one correctly. I don't want to do it by trial and error as I don't know what damage I can do:eek:

The plug for the old alt has four wires, 3 the same and 1 small wire. All the thick wires look the same colour and 2 run in a little loom with the thin wire. The last thicker wire runs off in a different direction. I've put some picture at http://stukennedy.co.uk/landrover.htm The 3rd from bottom shows the old alternator and plug and the forth picture shows the new alternator.

You've been a great help to me so far so can someone help or does it go back.

Cheers, Stu
