Today on my way home from work my td5s battery light illuminated and has stayed illuminated since.

I have done what checks I can but can only come to the conclusion that the alternator has packed in.
I checked the battery with the ignition on and it read 12v precice.
On turning the car over to running it reads 11.9v.

I'm assuming it should read more like 13 or 14v if its receiving charge?

Can anyone assist me with this before I shell out on a new alternator? And are the ones off ebay any good or should I go genuine?

Cheers

Not familiar with the td5 but assuming it's just a bog standard alternator with no fancy ECU controlling output...
Check voltage at the alternator itself before condeming it. Could just be a mouldy plug on the back..

Yes 11.9V ins't high enough, you have told us the battery is sitting at 12V and then 11.9 on running so the charge indicator is on because there isn't the higher voltage on the generation side to cancel the light - i.e. no charge the power flows through the indicator illuminating it.

You need a reg pack unless the alternator is making some nice grinding squealing noises or is very old then I'd just replace it or rebuild.

because vac pump is run off the front of the alt and has full engine oil pressure/flow running through it ,get a new decent brand alternator,if alt bearing fails or gets any play youll have a serious oil leak that will empty the sump

Make sure it’s not something simple first. My battery light wouldn’t go out when I started to drive back from a local farm. Checked under the bonnet when I got home, wonder why it’s not gone out?
