I have recently changed the alternator and battery and the battery light comes on solid every so often, checked alternator is charging the battery and battery is holding the charge, do i need to update the car's ecu that a new battery has been fitted its on a 2008 freelander 2

Have you checked/double checked all of the cables and connections?
