I am getting a loud bang when i pull off and when i accelerate off in another gear. I have got under the car and i think its the half shaft... that is attached to the bevel pinion housing..... there appears to be allot of play. I can rotate the shaft approximately a inch, is this right.

Help please

Sorry i got the details out of the Landrover workshop manaul part 2 pg 4-f. but to try and clarify the play apears to be where the half shaft joins the front axel.

who wrote yer manwell? paulb?

you mean the diff output where the prop joins yer axle.
have you checked yer uj's? do a search on here thurs lots about clunks on takin up drive

yes replace front halfshaft!!

it should be done anyway of you can feel play it may improve your problem
what?? shirley you mean prop shaft and if you did yer still wrong.
he needs to find out where the play is before he starts changing bits

dint mention it but before you start ripping yer diff out check yer uj's

Ok i have looked everywhere and just need some clarification am i right in thinking;
  1. to check the UJ's i lay under the landy and holding both ends of the prop try and move it up and down? if this is right how much movement should there be?
  2. To check the diff i try and rotate the prop shaft? (which i have done and it rotates about 45deg freely)? again what should i be looking for.
Cheers

45 DEGREES!!!!!! - You got problems!

i wud have thought about 5 degrees max
try rotating the prop shaft and see - is there play in either of the joints at each end - or is the play in the diff/axle?

with the landy on flat ground and out of gear, i have held the front prop near the axel joint and rotated it until there is tenssion, dose this mean that the bevel gear attached to the prop shaft leading into the diff is worn?

if yu can turn the axle drive by 45 degrees it is either the diff is well and truly fooked or (and i think this is more likely) a drive shaft is buggered.

I once had a Old Landy 6-cylinder LWB what allowed the crownwheel to come loose on the diff-cage.

A bit of "play", some bad noises.

Later this same one sheared all the bolts holding the crownwheel to the diff when I was towing a 16 ton truck.

Useless ....

Do you know if the series 3 drive shafts are the same as the 2a's as i have a series 3 i can strip?

you need to count the number of splines on the shaft, on something that age it no good going by what it should be. i.e. when i got me 3 one side was 24 splines and tit other was 10. but havin sed that its more likely yer diff going by what you sed.

yer uj's shouldn't have any play but most folk can live with a little bit.
yer diff should have next to no movement and 45° is excessive.
