Hi folks,
I have a freelander 2, it has 255,000 miles on the clock after its last mot the guys said she was in great condition and looked like a wagon that had done 60k.Since that I started to get a loud noise on back wheel drivers side. It actually sounds like every so often someone hits it with a sledgehammer, it's just getting worse and starting to grind.I looked underneath and shocks etc are all OK.Any ideas good people?

Sounds from boxes of gears like someone's hitting it with a sledgehammer, sounds very familiar!

Very loud noises.

Noises to make you cringe.

That's what I had when the IRD on my F1 went - gears slipping and making a hell of a BANG. Even just pushing the car, not under the power of the engine, made the same bangs.

So I'd suggest your diff is ker-nackered.

It might be something else, maybe the Haldex is getting 'grippy' with sudden releases of tension (wind-up) that's causing the bang. However, if you're getting continuous grinding noises, my thoughts are they are shot bearings in the diff.

Diffs on F2's are notoriously ropey - predominantly on < 2011 cars. However, the Haldex can turn them, or the front PTO, to mush almost as easily as the VCU on a F1.

When was the Haldex last serviced?

Should say that bangs can travel through the chassis and appear to come from another place. Unlikely, but are you sure it is the rear, and not the PTO up front?

As the rear diff has a weakness on these, and having had my rear diff seize at 45, I'd be having the rear diff checked ASAP, as having it seize solid isn't something I fancy experiencing again, and I'm glad I was driving when it did, and not the wife.
