Hello everyone. I am Marben from the island of Malta. I have a freeeldnder 2006 automatic which i use for a sunday drive. I own this car for the past 17 years. Recently i am having problems with my auto box. When i start the car and drive for the first couple of miles everything is fine but then when i stop and go again it does not engage from 2nd gear to 3rd. It goes like neutral. I have no dash warnings or lights coming on. When i took it to a mechanic to check with his computer it gave him no faults. He topped it up with some oil but still the problem persits. He thinks that i should change the whole mechatrnic which i think its quite expensive. 2 years ago i changed the factory gearbox oil and after some months it started with this problem. The car is kept in a basement garage for the wholw week. I only do around 600 miles annualy. Can it be an electrical problem?
Thankyou.

Try uplugging & cleaning the two round electrical plugs at the top front of the gearbox. Did you do the fluid at correct temperature & engine running ?

Try

The RAVE procedure is less than ideal because it does not mention the Jatco Fluid Level plug or how to top-up correctly.

1. After draining old fluid, refit the drain plug.
2. Remove the Level Plug - see picture & make absolutely sure you remove the correct one.
3. Now fill the transmission from the top until fluid drips from the level plug hole.
4. Start the engine & check the transmission temperature until it reaches 35-40degC
5. Top up the fluid until more drips from the level plug hole.
6. Re-fit the level plug with engine still running.
7. Re-fit the filler plug & switch off the engine.

when I did my auto conversion the gearbox worked fine, but quite quickly after the initial start it started making a nasty noise, this was after refilling, engine warm and running, upto the level.

I drove it around a bit (including a one hour drive to a geabox specialist and back) before deciding to check the level again.

It was comically low, it took nearly another litre to get it up to the correct level.

I think that this is because it took a bit of driving to refill the torque converter probably, as I had actually emptied mine whe I took the gearbox to bits.

My point is, that all this time, including whilst the level being so low that the pump was making weird noises, it drove and changed gear just fine.

So my gut feel is that OPs problem isn't an oil level that's too low.

Solenoids?

I tend to agree, hence I suggested cleaning the connectors first. Solenoid resistance testing has been well covered in this forum as well.
