Credit where credit is due.

Just had my windscreen replaced by Autoglass.

Being cheeky, I printed off the relevant pages of RAVE and left them on the front seat with a short note asking the guy to read them first, because the previous replacement (I don't know who did it) was a bodge where they broke all the trim clips, and then used mastic to stick it all back on again.

To be fair, the guy has done a good job. Wife tells me (and the job sheet shows) he turned up with the windscreen, bag of the white clips and new black screws for the side and lower trim, and a brand new upper finisher.

Unfortunately he didn't use the upper finisher (said my present one was in good condition, and he didn't bend it getting it off so he refitted it).

I now have a good clean un-chipped heated screen ready for winter, and it looks like it's been installed correctly and very cleanly.

My only regret is that had I been there I would have offered to break the upper finisher for him, so I could have a brand new one. But you can't win them all, I'm just glad he put the windscreen in properly.

Well done Autoglass.

They did mine to and really moaned and complained. Said it was a two man vehicle and could only send the one set of hands. Had to drill scuttle screws out because they were that badly gone, went through 3 of his poundland dril bits! Said he would order some more bit never did and left it. Did a fair and proper job though.

I replaced all my scuttle screws about a month back because they were done for.

Got some good Japananned self tappers from eBay for about 80p and did the lot.

Wish I'd left that job too now!

whats the actual glass quality like compared to the original ? mines got a chip or 2 in it,and i am fully comp :bowl:

Seems very good. I can't find a brand name on it or anything like that, but it's got the gradient thing all the way around the edge, and it fits very well.

I have the heated screen version, and it seems to be the same as the last one.

There's a slight green tint like the old one. But, I can't compare the old one (that was a replacement too) to the new one because it was taken away, so it's hard to say which is better.

How many companies are there that make Windscreens for the P38? They're probably all made by the same bloke aren't they?

Autoglass are part of Belron a huge Belgian based, world wide operation in the motor trade. If your windscreen doesn't carry a makers name like Pilkington or Sant Gobain or a Land Rover logo then it's come from 'another' manufacturer. It doesn't mean that it's no good, just perhaps that the glass is a little thinner. It will have been commissioned from somewhere by Belron then shipped all over the world to their subsiduaries.

You see genuine NOS ones come up on eBay from time to time.

I did consider doing it myself, but £300 for the screen, plus then I've got to fit it myself.

I think I could do a good job of it if I bought a fitting kit, but at £75 to get Autoglass to do it and I don't have to do anything I thought fok it!

tip- what you should do, is when you see an autoglass van around your way, i collared one at a local paper shop once, or when he comes out to do a screen for you...get his number for private work, ie jobs when you have the glass already

one came round and removed some disco rear windows so we could change the perished seals, re fitted them, and swapped over a windscreen on another car charged me £30 cash ;)

I had mine done on previous P38, they only plugged on sie of the screen in (the passangers side for some unknown reason) and said they could only find one socket to plug it into - surprising as they had to unplug two plugs - and I watched them unplug them, but wasn't available when they fitted the new screen as I had a meeting to go to....took a bit of fiddling under the scuttle panel to reattach the second one.

Like everything it is all down to who you get had mine done and the bloke was brilliant replaced all trim and the windscreen was in top condition Autoglass in Staines

Now treat that new screen to new wiper blades as well before the old ones scratch it.

Fitted new wiper blades at the weekend.

Whilst doing so I noticed the Pilkingtons brand in the bottom corner, so it looks like top quality glass too.
