Hi to everyone, a nice informative site.

I own a 97 300Tdi, bought whilst in Saudi now it's living in Finland and now the problems have started, new engine (after a botch job in Saudi), various other headaches popping up and being resolved as we go.

The latest is weird, first thing in the morning, normal starting no problems, but when we set off, the auto transmission hangs in first till around 3000 rpm, then kicks into 2nd, after this the babes as sweet as a cake, no problems until the next morning. Last service was okay which included the transfer box oil change.

Any ideas to help me out on this little but annoying hiccup for my disco?

Regards

Tom:confused:

Hi tommin, this sounds horribly familiar..zf4hp22 tranny?mine went the same, looked at it,fiddled, had it flushed couple of times.Kept getting worse, then it failed big time. After a long search i got a replacement & fitted it.Alls well now.By the way, dont be fooled by the rumour that a rangie zf will do the job..make sure if you need a new box,get the right one.Good luck.mucky`un bristol uk

Thanks for the info, will see how it goes, I have no intention with playing with it apart from routine servicing, have heard that the filter can cause this sort of problem, so will add to the next service.

What finally happened to your ZF, what actually happened for final failure, am just interested, so I can keep an eye out for any similarity if my starts to get worse!!!

Cheers matey

Hi tommin, i had the same problem with mt 97 300tdi disco just after an oil top up. I took it in for a service, had the filter changed at the same time and it aint missed a beat since!!! would be the first thing i would look at!!
Good luck

Cheers matey, booking it in next month for it's routine service plus now the transmission as well, by the way where (i know this sounds stupid) will I find the filter for this? and is it easily accessible?

Weathers doing the suicide jump, now at -5 and falling so have to get it done pronto, again thanks for the info, will let you know the outcome.

Discos rough it, where others stay at home tucked up in their cozy garages!!!

Hi Tommin, filter is easy.Warm up & drain main tranny then remove main tranny sump.Filter screen then visible & removable for wash out. Make sure you have a new sump gasket available before you split it ,just in case.Sounds pretty chilly to me! dont think i fancy lying under a motor in temps like that! Good luck.mucky`un.
