I recently had had my JATCO gearbox reconditioned, but upon replacement it will drive fine for 200mtrs or so and then starts the LCD display flashes 4 and i think E, and you loose all drive. If you unplug the lead that connects to the gearbox that disconnents all selection from the gearbox, it will stay in 4th and is bearly drivable, as you can imagine it is very difficult to drive everywhere in 4th gear!!!! please can anyone help?

I thought that it was F and 4. F four fault.

Mine did it when i played in some water without the splash covers on. Check the 2 large round connectors between the radiator and the gearbox on the front offside of the car.

Search jatco gearbox problems, there are a few threads about them on the go, at the moment.
Rovers and volkswagons use them and there is alot of info on their forums.

Had same problem. Diagnosed 2-4 brake solenoid code1748. Needs to get diagnosed. Cost of repair about £500. New solenoid and main oil pressure control solenoid.

I just went through this (and I hope it's over!). At first it was randomly. And if you turn the car off (even while rolling!), and turn it back on, F4 disappears for a while. Sometimes for 20-30 miles, and sometimes for 100 yards. The code was P1717 (low clutch solenoid).

After I sprayed the barrels with contact cleaner, it all went away, and I was happy. For TWO days! Then it came back.

So I searched, and searched (checked the resistance from the barrels, AND from TCM). All was good, and it was still going into F4 every few miles or so.

Then I ZIP tied the barrels (per Hippo's advice), and it got worse. It would not come out of the garage, as soon as the shifter was engaged, without F4.

So in frustration, I cut the zip ties, opened the barrels, washed them again with the contact cleaner, and while I was at it, I washed the whole fuse box, and all relays. I put the barrels back together (without zip ties), and the problem hasn't reappeared in about a week of daily driving!

I'm hoping that's it. If it comes back, I'm cutting the barrels off, and soldering the wires together. I am ALMOST certain the barrels are the cause of this. There is NOTHING wrong with the tranny (and I KNOW the bad tranny from the good one). This fault is ELECTRICAL in nature.
