Possibly a stupid question. But just got round to servicing and checking my 'new' 1998 300TDI that I brought back from England a coupe of weeks ago. Just looked at the auto gearbox oil to find it way too full. Oil and the filter were changed by a dealer just before I got it (should have known better and checked before). Oil in it is spotless, box very smooth. But is there any benefit from using a Lucas Stop Slip or their fluid conditioner when I drain and fill to the correct level ?
Going to have to order from England but not using the car now till it's right, can't buy Lucas products here for some reason.

Never used the stuff in my 25 years of auto, whats the need?
The question is how are you checking the fluid? it's detailed in the owners handbook on how to check level, also in the forum if you search if still to much just undo the drain plug.

Hi Graham, I don't mean to teach my Granny to suck eggs but, you do know that you have to check the auto box oil level using a specific sequence don't you?

1. Turn on the engine and let it tickover;

2. Select each gear position in turn leaving a few seconds in each one to fully take up drive;

3. Then back into P, LEAVING THE ENGINE RUNNING, whilst you go to the engine bay remove the dipstick, wipe clean and dip the sump.


You may well find your oil level is now correct????

Thank you both for your comments. It's not a question of how to do, but the box is really over full and now I've got to drop the oil to get it back to the right level. So is it worth while to use something in the Stop Slip line when I do it ?
The box, if original, has 150K on it and while I don't think Lucas stuff would do any harm, will it do any good ?
A good w/end or what is left of it.

I have D1 EDC auto Jap Import.

The gearbox dipstick says:

- check when cold, engine idling, in Neutral

I'm confused should you check in N or P.?
 
It won't be a lot that's got to be drained because its only small amounts of oil that makes a big difference on the dipstick. Would do the check procedure because if not done correct the dipstick will read that it has too much in

Confused, Oh dear :(

The owners handbook states place the selector in P before taking the dip-stick reading but N or P doesn't make the slightest difference in that reading.

My company car (Honda) states P and taking the reading with the engine/fluid 'hot'.

Selecting P is a safety thing as the transmission is locked.
