It appears that there have been some problems recently with transmissions from Ashcrofts.
They have, generally, had a good name on this forum.
You might like to mention on this thread, your thoughts.

Maybe Ashcrofts would like to comment?

gonna put up another thread inviting Britpart, Zues, Devon4x4, Nene et al to account for their failings as well ?
 
Ashcrofts reply, over on another place, is to simply tell the poster to contact them direct and it'll get resolved
 
Thats good for thoser that have problems (I think? :rolleyes:) - but doesnt inspire confidence in prospective new clients, does it?
 
give it a little while and i can report back, my 110 is getting a custom transmission from them put in. i have only heard good stuff about them, and from what i have seen their parts seem top notch

I read on another forum that a few members had encountered quality problems a while ago. The conclusion was that this was now sorted (by sacking the person involved, I believe), but I think it's hurt their reputation a bit.

Mmmmm this should be interessting.

Okay we all know about the two members of this forum that have recently had boxes fail just out of warrantee. Jai & Phil that is. Are there any more?

I was about to buy a stumpy R380 to replace my dodgy one that I bought in Morocco to replace my blown one. But that plan is now on hold, because a gearbox that may pack up in 13 months is no good to me.

Ashcroft make it very clear on their website that they don't replace all the bits when they rebuild a box, maybe this is the problem, maybe a 25 year old component is no good, even if it looks good on the outside ?

Jai can you confirm what failed in your box, was it a component that was not replaced ??

Maybe Ashcroft could do an option on an all new component rebuilt box, I'd certainly pay extra for the piece of mind...

There is alot of love for Ashcroft on the other forums, and I can't seem to really find a pattern of failures anywhere, but then someone who uses a gearbox for some occasional Sunday laning is not putting the same stresses on it as Jai & Phil, and well me :D
 
Didnt you have a noo box on yo trip to Morocco - the one you had to leave behind? Or am I mistaken - definately got the impression it was a "new" (refurbed) box.....

I went to Morocco with a brand new geniune LR Disco Transfer Box, the gearbox was a "good" used "checked over" gearbox that I bought from Dunsfold, I had to leave both behind...:(

The gearbox transfer box I have now comes from a drug lords old 4cyl 110 :(
 
have either of you phoned and talked to Ashcrofts about the failures ?

Phil will probably be on the phone now, as his only blew up yesterday. Jai has spoken to them, and while he seems have the utmost respect for them (ashcroft), I think the outcome was bad luck it is out of warrantee..

i hope that's not the case, at the very least I would expect him to have it back on the bench for a strip down to at least find to failure, if only to learn from for the future

I am more than happy to discuss these issues and be totally open with you,

Yes we have had quality issues in the past and I have made some very expensive mistakes in both monetary terms and reputation but we have always tried our best to resolve issues with the customer in a fair manor and learn from these mistakes,

In the last 18 months we have had 2 reoccurring warranty issues :

1) The moly coating flaking off some LT77 baulk rings, causing poor shifts, looked fine on inspection but after approx 3-4 months the coating started to come off due to poor bonding by the manufacturer, baulk rings were quarantined as soon as the problem was recognized and we switched supplier,

2) Our usual supplier ran out of a bearing for the LT230 intermediate pin and the replacement ones came in unbranded and the goods in guy didn't notice, they went on the shelf and were used, these turned out to be no good and we started to see failures within 3 months, again parts were quarantined as soon as the problem was recognized.

I don't think either of these issues are related to the failures discussed in this thread but I can't be sure as I have no details of these failures as yet.

There is no truth in me sacking a member of staff for sabotaging gearboxes.

We do not replace all parts when rebuilding units or this would not be 'rebuilding' it would be 'assembling new' and the far higher cost would reflect this.

Our company stance when a unit fails after 12 months is never 'tough it's out of warranty', we offer what we call an 'at cost repair' this means if you bring the box to us we do the labour free of charge and charge the parts at cost, a typical repair is either FOC or upto £ 100. This is what we would offer to both Jai and Phil if they wanted to bring the boxes to us.
