I'm tidying up my 1998 Discovery 1. It's never going to be perfect but there's a few areas where the paint could do with attention, it's bubbling up and has chipped off in one place. It gets used for what it's meant for so I'm not bothered about a perfect finish by any stretch but wanted to spray the affected areas.

Three questions:

are the body panels aluminium?
Is there anything I can do to treat the bubbling if they are?
Is my body colour Armada gold?

Hi EdoubleD.

If you ever need to know if it is Ali or not, Try to stick a magnet on it.

Is there not a paint code on the VIN plate?

Once the ali oxidizes then you need to remove all the manky rubbish. Otherwise it only comes back.

Cheers

I'm fairly sure that the Disco panels are steel, but an easy check is with a magnet.

My mag mount aerials stick OK, but it is a D2.

Did you use glue?????..............................:D:D:D

I just look for different colour "rust".................Red rust = steel, Silver "rust" = Ali..................LOL

Cheers

To treat it you need to abrade the area back to clean shiny metal then IMMEDIATELY treat with an etch primer, (U-Pol Acid8 in aerosol form is very good), as the clean surface will start to oxidise straight away & the 'skin' that forms will affect the ability of paint to stick to it...
After that, fill prime & paint as required.

You said D1 in the opening post ... play fair ...

This is electrolytic corrosion aluminium turns to a white powder when rotting ...

I’ve just been out to mine (Disco 2) and checked. The roof and the four side doors are steel. Other panels, front wings, rear quarters, tailgate door and bonnet are alloy. The floors are probably steel too, since they are known to rust.
So I think that we can safely call it a draw. :D

Did you look at the VIN plate in the engine bay to see what it said? if anything?

Cheers
