Hi all,

I have just bought my first Landrover. It's a 2001 Discovery, 3.9 V8, 185000km's first registered in Dubai but now in Oman with me.

Sometimes when I turn the engine on the three warning lights come on. Sometimes they stay on for 5 minutes, sometimes for the whole trip.

My question is this: is it ok to drive with them on / is the car still safe - because this is a common electrical fault, or should I get it checked by a mechanic?

From reading through posts it seems that sensors go 'wrong' and this causes the electrical systems to 'think' something is wrong when in fact the car is mechanically ok?

Any helpful answers appreciated!

Sounds like the 3 amigo, best bet is to get it plugged in and read. It could be a hub or the svs (shuttle valve switch).

Yes, they are the "3 amigos".
The cause could be a number of different things, quite often a worn or otherwise faulty wheel hub but the only real way to find out exactly what's gone wrong is to connect a diagnostic computer such as Hawkeye, Nanocom, Lynx or Testbook. Don't get misled by using a "generic" OBDII diagnostic device, The Disco isn't OBDII compliant.
The 3 amigos isn't a common electrical fault, it's an indication of a mechanical problem with something down by the wheels or braking system.
Now, your next job is to get over to the "Introduce Yourself" section and ..... errr, um ....... introduce yourself before some other members stomp all over you!

hub or SVS faults are the most common but there can be other reasons too though so as said get it plugged in a tester to read the fault code...the difference between sensor/hub faults and all the other is that on sensor/hub fault the ABS light remains on alone untill the speed exceeds 10mph, on all other faults the ignition cycle resets them all together(if it's not permannent fault)... depending on the fault there are different default modes and the system might not work at all...see attachments

Yes it's safe to drive, but be aware you may not have ANY ABS, so think old school; she will lock a wheel or two, or 4 when you stamp on the brakes! You may have some residual ABS, not as quick as normal, but still there. You will get stuck like any normal car without 4WD due to lack of traction control.
