OK, I'm not having much luck through the usual sources so thought I'd ask on here. I'm after something quite specific as I am planning to drive to Morocco next year, and need a sound vehicle to get me there. So, I am after either:

- A Range Rover Classic, ideally a 300Tdi soft dash but a 'hard dash' or 200Tdi is fine. Would much prefer an auto over a manual, and would ideally like a later-model (1991-onwards) Vogue SE rather than a Vogue - but condition is more important than spec. I cannot stress enough how important it is that the car is mechanically and structurally sound - i.e. no rotten sills, rotten footwells, rusted wheel arches, knackered rear cross members, rotten boot floors, etc. Rotten tailgate not so bad, can be easily replaced, but it's gotta be a solid vehicle, please.

OR

- A Range Rover P38 diesel. Must be an auto and would much prefer a car that still has the EAS rather than a coil spring conversion. Not too fussed about the bodywork, but must be mechanically sound and a nice interior as I'll be spending a lot of time in it. Want working EAS, working HEVAC, etc but not too fussed if there's some minor niggles to sort out.

Budget for this is anything up to £3k, but £3k is my absolute limit for the base vehicle - £2-£2.5k would be better as it gives me a small slush fund for repairs.

Let me know what you've got!

Even they can have problems, fully paid up member of the Pajero cracked head club, but would be more confident in a Landcruiser.

80 series and on are sooooooo much better and you dont have to treat them yourself like a rrc the factory stuff is still good even now. body has no rust either.

must confess ive looked at a few recently

Agreed 80 or 100 series, they are all over the place over there so would probably be the easiest to get sorted if needed and mechanicaly pretty bullet proof. A Nissan Patrol would also be a good bet. I have no problem going anywhere in my P38 in the UK but must admit would think twice on going abroad as getting parts might be a nightmare if needed, don't care who argue's the point but would definatly not go unless it had a coil conversion as the EAS is bound to f#ck up in the middle of nowhere and that would be fun. Whatever you choose to do your trip in I hope you have a great time.

Sorry guys, it's gotta have an LR badge on for me - jap stuff just does not float my boat!

I reckon the P38 is underrated - there's loads out in Dubai, not as many as Landcruisers admittedly, but plenty P38's and RRC's go playing in the desert without problems!

I reckon a P38 will be fine as long as I take the lead and reset software for the EAS and perhaps a spare front + rear airbag spring. I don't fancy a coil-sprung P38, they weren't designed for it - plus the EAS is useful for different terrain.

That couple proved an L322 can make it through Africa and they're not renowned for superb build quality (the L322, not the couple). There's plenty of Disco 3's doing overlanding trips too, and a P38 is simpler than them. With some decent/thorough preparation I reckon it'll make a fantastic expedition vehicle - comfort, space and great offroad performance, perfect.

Fett - whats slitty??

p38

you know your asking for trouble mike, p38 is designed for shopping in a dry enviroment.

Just go slitty and have a nice holiday.

btw slitty mean japenese car

If it were me I'd go for a nice LWB Series III or Defender. But whatever you do, make sure you check EVERYTHING and replace ANYTHING if in doubt before you go. I took a 109 across the Sahara to Timbuktu and back and it was a daft thing like engine mountings that nearly got us stranded. It's not fluffy play sand like Dubai; mile after mile after mile (after mile) of bone jarring rubble takes it's toll on any vehicle and in Morocco you will probably never drive on sand for longer than about 15 seconds unless you drive down a beach. Think 'rocks'. Actually, on second thoughts EAS sounds very appealing :)

Keep things as simple as possible; desert mechanics can fix anything, I once saw a Land Cruiser running on wooden leaf springs!!!

i have a 2.5 diesel dse but it is manual,no hevac,124,000 miles, but unfortunately not for sale, there are many 4x4 vehicles out there, and what do you replace it with?
i find it hard to live with sometimes, but would not be without it,hope you find a good one.

I know everyone goes for a Defender, but I'm quite broad and tall and don't find them comfortable over distance. Discovery 1's just don't float my boat either and most are getting on a bit now!

A Disco 2 would do the trick, but all the ones in my budget have done moon mileages.

My absolute best bet would be a RRC 300 Tdi soft dash, but finding a decent one for sensible money is literally impossible.

I still reckon a P38 would do the trick, though - I'm planning on going with Trailmasters (it's our first trip like this and don't fancy it alone!) and they've had a Range Rover Sport go before, so a P38 should be fine! :)
