What you think they seemed to think is was diesel spilled onto starter? i suspected a nipped wire unfortunate but it does happen
 
I saw it, and agree the way it behaved looked like a short, cut wire etc. that tdv6 looks a nightmare to work on though. To be honest I don’t pay too much attention to the salvage rebuilds, content is ok but the main guy, Rob? Does seem to like the sound of his own voice where other guy who does the mechanical work is a lot quieter which is shame as he does know his stuff.
 
I think the sport wiring must be different on a D3 you can just un plug the most of the left hand side and the main plugs to move it across out off the way without any loose wires their not that bad you just need to be careful I was a bit surprised by them saying it was toast you might get away with engine loom as long as no electronics are burnt out
