Hi.
My project 109 S2 (@sho161g) is likely to be getting a 300tdi. I bought it with a Rover P5 Weslake 6 cylinder fitted but as I want to use the LR for my new stop start commute I would never be able to afford the fuel.
I gather it will need a bellhousing change or gearbox change.
Also will need engine mounts changing, battery moving in the cab but with the different bulkhead will this need changing?
Could the 300 be fitted using the same gearbox mounts with the engine just sitting further back?
Early days but just planning in advance.

Hi,
In about a week the Weslake 6 will be taken out of my LR and I'll be looking to sell and a quick collection for Hebden Bridge West Yorkshire
as it will be in the way of the chap doing the engine swap.

There some vids of it below. The engine has a small crack in the inlet manifold which is currently at Bowler Motorsport hopefully being repaired.

The engine came in the LR when I bought it and apparently came from a Rover P5 guy who said it was a good runner. It's the engine only will come with the carb but not the fan seen in the vids but they are cheap on ebay.

What engine did it have in when it left the factory? This will determin the bulkhead. It may have been modified to fit the 6cyl but the task may be unmodifying or further modification depending on what was done.

Have to say, I think you would be very ill advised to do that. Six cylinders were a premium model, and are now quite rare and collectable.

I would get a little car for the commute, and use the landrover for leisure, laneing, and load carrying, as it was intended.

Driven gently, the fuel consumption isn't that bad either, you could commute for years on the cost of an engine, and all the parts and labour needed to install it in a six cylinder vehicle.
 
+1 on the above, I'd want to know what engine it left the factory with to advise you - and if it was a 6 from new, then it's an appreciating asset which, IMHO, would be way better left as a 6.

I have never heard of anyone installing 6 cylinder petrol in a 4 cylinder vehicle, and I imagine there is quite a lot of work involved, the bulkhead and trans tunnel in a 6 are different, and the front propshaft is shorter.

I was thinking that too - so I did a search. according to this:-

( I know, US website, but...) it might be a pretty rare thing- @tobyd10 , if you have a genuine weslake head engine in a genuine fitted from factory series, I'd be very careful about changing the engine.

As it says in your link, 6 cylinder are just a nicer drive. And as you say, even rarer and more collectable with the Weslake head.

Anything with a 6 pot is a nicer drive - 6's have such a nice torque curve inherently... not sure "nicer" does it justice ;) it's betterer than nicero_O:):D

And V8's are betterer again :confused::):rolleyes:

The LR is a factory six cylinder but it's not very original so unlikely to be an appreciating asset.

The LR will be a daily driver when sorted and reliable so the TDI is the best option going forward, just need to find a buyer for the 6.

Reckon a lot of peeps would find your six very desirable. Why not put it up for a swap for a tdi or whatever and save yourself a lot of work and expense?

I suggest you drive something with a Tdi in it first. They produce about 110 horse if they are perfect, and most are far from perfect these days.
 
The 6 pot on LPG would be a very nice economical drive and easy to reverse any changes. Going from a smooth and quiet 134bhp to a noisy shakey 110 bhp will feel like a lot of wasted effort.

Not to mention the delights of fitting an intercooler rad in a Series.

Exactly. My 300 Tdi is tuned to 145, but the induction roar gets tiresome. The fuel economy, driveability and reliability do not. I was actually looking at a V8 the other day, and quite seriously too.
 
And that's before they introduce a low emissions zone and charge diesels £12 to drive in. I live near the London LEZ and LandRovers before 2002 have to pay. Historcs are exempt so my diesel LWB get in free as does my 1992 500SL Merc. The Merc does 20 mpg (very light right foot) and the Series 30 mpg but add the LEZ charge the 5lr petrol is a lot cheaper to drive than the 3.3 Diesel. I like driving diesels, especially in a Series but I'd be very wary of taking out a petrol engine the way enviro/politics are going.

Especially from a historic vehicle, which will lose that status if re-engined.

If you are honest in declaring it, a non standard engine will lose the vehicles historic status.

I have no idea why you are asking our opinion if you have no intention of listening to what we have said.

So I can only assume you are trying to advertise the engine, despite not having the 50 constructive posts to do so.

Engine is only 1 point under the historic status point system iirc
