Well dan, ive been a proud owner of a 1.8 2001 S for 7 days now, beautiful condition, 45k full LRSH 2 owner did HPI check even got it checked by the AA.... and no, have bought a right bag of hammers. Have replaced the rear diff mounts and now its starting to use water...bloody CHG i think, so far not so good. Going to get a pressure test done tomorrow. Will I get shot of it...well dont know yet...watch this space.

the 1.8 engine is revvy, powerful and lightweight, not just an enthusiasts engine but a purists engine.

They are high maintenance, needing regular oil and coolant checks.

They leak oil from sumps, cam carriers from early mileage <20k

Hgf is nothing new, thats a whole mega thread in itself. If it happens, we'll point you in the right direction.

If you like engines, you could be tempted, be prepared to get you hands dirty, or else fork out for a garage to do expensive repairs.

If that doesnt float your boat then walk on to the Japaneses motor section.

well now that you ask, my VVC engine will be 9yrs old next spring, still on original cam belts, everything is OE, it weeps oil from the usual places but considering it gets revved to 7.5k rpm on a regular basis and dusts the doors off Porsche boxsters and Audi TT's I'd say its a damn good injun ;)

Its just not for your average Joe, or mum shipping the kids to school

N.I., could i ask what Freelander you have? 1.8k or 2.5V6?

I have a 1.8 but never dare to push it over 6000 revs, how often do you have it that high?

LOL, i'd love to see the looks on the porsche drivers face!!

I'm always surprising the local chavs in their 'souped up' corsas and saxos, but haven't challenged anything else at the lights in my freelander lol. Apart from a 1.6 astra the first day i got it but i wasn't quite used to it! I hate to say it but he whooped me! lol

Lol Crewey, where have you been ;)

MHM already knows about my other car its just a humble Morris Garage soft top affair ;)

My FL1 is just 120bhp the early 1.8i with dizzy cap, unlike the VVC it has the normal rev range.

The 1.8 weighs 95kg and can be easily tuned to under 200bhp, pricey mind you, but when you think of the power to weight ratio on a norm aspirated engine, thats pretty powerful

I've mentioned these mods before, get over to MG-Rover.org and read through any of the chav sections MG/ZR MG/ZS, or the Tuning and Modifications section, a pic of your bonnet scoop would go down a treat.

The biggest problem in the 1.8 is gas flow and poorly finished casting, porting the heads, 52mm TB, deCAT and decent induction kit will show a noticable difference.

Grrrrr I must have been dropped on a head as a child. Going to keep Freelander No HGF just needed a new filler cap as it was leaking. Have ordered hayes manual, cancelled weekends for the rest of my life (time for repairs) and renewed AA membership.

Bloody addictive little thing.

On a positive note regarding the 1.8, spoke to a few mechanics who claim they see more HGF's on Fiat's compared to Freelander, so we pay our money and take our chance with any vehicle.

are't freelanders to low /short geared for traffic light GPs?
try rerouting the exhaust down the left side chuck standard silencer
and fit a powerflow stainless can
SOUNDS A BIT LOUD THOUGH:D :D

hey-- if your gonna race corsa boys you gotta sound the part
Me im to worried about fuel consumption

haha, stainless exhaust was actually the next thing on my list once i've finished my air induction! My plan was to get a custom stainless, and put it somewhere it wouldn't catch while off roading! Surely the standard exhaust has to be one item that catches the most while off roading!

I've heard you can get back sections that totally do away with silencers, if i remember rightly some modded discos have em. Having no silencer box would surely add inches to clearance under the exhaust? And sound a hell of a lot better!

Mines one of the early 1.8's too, sounds like i'mm gonna get myself over to these MG forums!

Dunno if they're too low/short geared but i can certainly show the local chavs a thing or two! Best bit is, if the wheels spin, i see traction control come on straight away and the wheels grip the road perfectly, while a corsa or saxo is still trying to get grip and i'm half way down the road!

:D YouTube - Mad Freelander You Bet it is :D

now that sounds (and looks) foocin nice. Especially with the lift! Thats another thing on my list... 2 inch lift! how much did your nice shiny exhaust set ya back then?

Yeah i thought wtf also.

hehe

I think MHM means those stop/brake lollypop signs you see in pit stops.

You get the feeling Doobey is gonna dump the clutch any second..........but...........but............but............

Nothin happens, not even wheel spin :)

I have a SS downpipe from Rimmer bros, wasn't impressed when a weld on the front rubber mount went after 7 days, the welds on the heat shield under the IRD came away as well. It also leaks exhaust gases through the flexi-joint, all after market downpipes do this at the flexi section.

I sent it back under warranty, it came back and before long the welds on the heat shield broke again. :(

So I ripped the shield off, thats what led me to modify the sump guard for extra cooling through the downpipe and IRD.

The SS deCAT pipe at £35 was a good purchase, for legal reasons I only use a deCAT on private roads ;)
