Following on from my 'ground to a halt' thread I have a Defender with an Isuzu 2.8 TD (4JB1) which has died. The diagnostics suggested on this forum point to a timing belt failure (whilst driving) and therefore possible internal damage.

So, I guess the bottom line is timing belt supply/refit plus head off and check for damage and repair as required. I know there are some unknowns there but is there anyone who can suggest a ballpark figure for a fix?

Any ideas very much appreciated, I'm in Reading, Berks.

Hi Steve - A massive unknown and is difficult to predict. I would be surprised if it was less then £350. Personally I would source a 200TDI engine from an old discovery and fit that.

Yeah, I'm giving that some thought as I've just had an estimate of £800 - £1300 based on the info I have supplied! (for the fix that is, not a replacement engine)

Trooper timing belts are fairly easy to do. If nothing else is damaged 3-400 would be reasonable if there is any other damage it could easily rise above a thousand depending on whats bent although usually it would be cams and pushrods that take a beating as theyre the next weakest link.

Fit a tdi.
 
If it's just timing belt then you've got away lightly, most likely there'll be some other damage maybe including: smashed valves, damaged piston heads, bent con rods! Could easily be 2k + if so.
2nd hand engine might be the way forward. Really need someone to check the above first!
 
If the belt has snapped and he hasn't made any further attempts to keep starting it, then there's a good chance there will be minimum damage.

You can get the belt changed for as little as £150. I would suggest you give it ago yourself. Personally however, I would fit a 200TDi lump in it.

Unfortunately he mentions trying to restart it an awful lot in his previous post about "grinding to a halt". Like I said, he'll be lucky to get away with just a snapped belt ( not impossible though! ).
I'd agree with sticking a TDi lump in, not immune from timing belt issues of course, but easier to maintain and loads more info on them available.
Oh, he's in Reading! ( Rovertune in Tilehurst are recommended! ).
