Hi I have a 2007 defender xs 2.4 which I love. I developed a tapping noise from the drivers side part of the engine sorry vague I'm just getting into learning about engines a total beginner. Checked oil and it was low my fathering in law put oil in it I am not sure what he used. I then went to book her in garage to investigate tapping they said it's just a tappet and to come back and would be OK for a journey as I was taking my girlfriend to Kent for day we had a babysitter not often that happens once in 5 years. We then spent the day broken down on m20 missus was not happy. The tapping goes through the range of gears quicker tapping when more rev. My landy then lost power I was in 6 gear just nothing pulled over tried to turn over and got nothing. I was then recovered and landy outside house next morning tried to fire her up nothing checked what I could even drain tank to make sure it was diesel which I think it was as was not a strong smell and felt like olive oil in my mouth. I then see a small bore plastic pipe was burnt away it was sealed I belive it was the gearbox remote breather I reconnected this then tried to start her again she fired up but was real shakey all the way down to the prop shaft think that's what it is and the tapping has turned in to a thud. Today I drained oil which for me was fun as learning easy enough new filter and put in 7 litres of 5w-30 fully synthetic engine oil I then started her again still shakey and a really Loud thudding with grey or white smoke from exhaust. When I looked in oil that I had drained there was little fragments of metal. Any ideas are appreciated thanks for reading. If it makes any difference the engine has 55,000 miles on her

Could be oil pump, was a recall on them, but it could also be the turbo falling to bits, call a dealer, ask if there are any recalls on it, or pm me the vin and or reg and i'll look for you

Car is not eligiable for oil pump recall so its possible,

if you didnt know btw your car was sold by stratstone aylesbury and they carried out recall P022

Cheers John no I didn't no I bought it from Brentwood just one of those things I suppose. On the good side she booked in for a full rebuild now thanks for the info though mate

If the little fragments of metal are shiny flakes, I would say a big end has failed. Tapping rapidly turns to thudding as the bearing disintegrates and the gap opens up between the crankshaft and con rod.

Yea that's what's happened been given a rough figure of 2500 depending on how much damage it has caused ☹️

Yea what a gutter where I'm just a novice didn't realise how much oil they drink had her 20 months oil was done when I bought her but I had just covered 6 k so thought she would be ok. Lesson learned gotta keep an eye on her
