Just bought a p38 and only got one key with fob

I keep reading about other keys required. i.e. key1 and 2

Can someone explain what is needed, and if I need another key for any reason?

Just dont understand other posts ive read

Cheers
Dave

when your car is new it comes with 4 keys, that get lost over the years.[still with it?] if you wish to renew one or more you need to go to main dealer, with log book and passport or the likes.[still with it?] the cost will be around £150 for one key fob. hope that helps you..

Right, well I need a spare key and fob, as I only have the one.

Whats the cheapest option to get this?

Cheers Dave

From a main Dealer with your vin number and ID. Its the only reliable way. Get a key 3 or 4 as you will not be sure if you have key 1 or 2 as the sticker will be worn

So if the keys are supposedly all the same, why would I need key 3 or 4??

You can only have one of each 'number' of key synced to the car's electronics. If you have, say, key number one and you buy another number one, when you sync it to the car this will delete the other key's information so your original key will not work.

The FOB's are all different, if your P38 has memory seats, opening the car with key 1 will set the seats and mirrors to your position, likewise key 2 will set them to your wife or partners position. My book only mentions 3 keys, the third being classed as a spare. It is not possible to synch two fob's of the same number to the car, so for example if you had two key 1's only one would work. To buy another Fob, first you have to establish the number (1,2 or 3) of the working Fob you already have.:D

Thanks mate

That makes perfect sense :clap2:

How do you establish the different keys, I know someone said they were colour coded, and probably worn off, but were was the colour code originally?

There should be a white label on the opposite side to the buttons with lots of CE guff and the key number. All mine are the same colour.

I have one key that is not in synch, is it possible to have them redone if thats that the right word!

Yes it came with the car, and has always been my main key, then oddly it stopped working, then one morning the other key would'nt work and that one did, and then it swapped around again,... so I have only one key which worries me aswell!

try resincing it depending on age of the car, mine i resync in the door lock press lock button on fob turn key to lock then same with unlock..
