OK

I have a itch think I need to scratch.

Always loved the P38 and now think its time to own one (mid life crisis to some LOL)

The prob being we tow a 23ft caravan a lot and it will also be my daily car, looking at the diesel (yes i know its slow but have you driven a 1.6 air cooled campervan).

Yes i can spanner but after years of aircooled VW ownership, i dont want to be under it every weekend.

Honest answers please guys i wont get upset honest.;)

A decent chipped diesel is nothing like slow and will pull you van with ease.

Hi I have an un chipped p38 dse auto we tow a 26" adria adora caravan have taken it to Dorset steam fair for the last two years without a hitch as for under the bonnet like with most cars a good service history and condition should prove fine . I serviced mine last June and apart from weekly checks under the bonnet alls been fine good luck buy with your head not your heart good luck joe

My post 2000 DHSE unchipped pulls my Hobby caravan with ease. Be prepared for plenty of niggles and to change the airsprings if they haven't been done. They are not that slow (after a Hyundai Galloper) even unchipped, they just have an unusually insenitive long travel throttle pedal.

26 inch caravan? U a smurf? :D

A P38 diesel will pull your van with ease, a P38 petrol/lpg will pull your van and another with ease if you can figure the hitching. Check everything twice on any potential purchase and don't buy one without full history. You do hear horror stories but my P38 has been utterly reliable at 16 yrs old/180k and counting. Big alloys do nothing for handling. Air suspension is great for towing(when it's working) cos it self levels and retains compliance so you still have fantastic ride quality. Make sure the chassis isn't rotten and invest in waxoyl. If you tell us where you are you'll probably find someone local to help you in Rangies. Good luck

Hi arden daz.
unfortunately i have had a p38 for about 2yrs, never really been a fan of them but i needed something to tow my boat (legally), i had an x3 which despite what folk say it was brilliant at towing the boat which weighs 2800kgs inc but cos it would only tow 2000kgs legally i thought i would buy an old range rover which would do the job legally.
So i bought a 98 4.6 vogue it is in good condition only done 55000 miles and only the drivers seat had been sat in!!, it is useless at towing the boat, no guts and expensive,
although i must say it doesn't breakdown regular i'am always having to do something to it.
I wish i had taken heed of that old australian saying; if you want to travel the outback go in a Land rover, if you want to come back then go in a Land cruiser

The answer to the question you asked is YES.

but then I think we probably all are on here!

compared towhat you have the diesel will seem to pull like a train but consifder the petrol and there are laods about, they are generally cheaper that the diesel to buy and take LPG conversions really well so you end up with all the power of teh petrol but with diesel economy.

Never had a P38 diesel but there's loads of info in here particularily regsrding the effects of chippiing seems to have on the gearbox

whichever you go for, get the latest you can afford and find one that'e been looked after

just my 2p worth
