Howdy

I have a 1999 TD5 Defender. I had a new ( or a replacement alternator) fitted last year. At the beginning of the week, I noticed the battery labouring a little before the engine fired. 12 hours later, the battery died (1 of 2 batteries as it is a Land Rover Special vehicles- ex-utility vehicle). I got the volt meter out, and have tried testing to see if the alternator is charging. Absolutely no change between the static charge of the battery and the alternator. I am now am assuming that the alternator isn't 'throwing' any charge. The weird thing is that it was replaced so recently. It has been mentioned that there could be a problem with the rectifier.
Before I start to try to take the alternator out, is there any way of testing for other faults, including the rectifier??

Please help.

A number of guys have commented on alternators not lasting that long recently.

Suggest a trip to an auto electrician to get checked - basic voltage and current checks are all I know, and sounds like you've done that

I would check the wiring hasn't come off/loose somewhere first.
Have you been wading or splashing through any deep puddles recently?
Other than that, I'd suspect something has gone wrong with it, strange that it only lasted for such a short time though.
Could your twin batteries be putting too much strain on it?
