After even more frustration in getting tyres I want for my 18" alloys, I'm going to look to get some smaller wheels, either 15" or 16". Financially, it works out cheaper than paying almost twice as much for premium tyres. I've a TD4 Sport facelift, is there anything I need to be careful of when looking for smaller wheel sizes? For example I was told the Sport has slightly lower suspension than the standard FL1, and what tyre dimensions do you recommend?

Check the wheels are from 2001MY on ward vehicle with the built in spacer otherwise they’ll clash with the brakes.

Sorry I don't get this. You bought a FL1 Sport, presumably because you like the look of it on its smart 18" wheels. Then you want to change the wheels to smaller ones, simply to save a few £ on replacing tyres. That's nuts in my opinion.

You're better off selling the Sport, which fetch a premium price over lesser models. Then buy said lesser model with smaller wheels.

I bought Sport rims for my SE because the wheels look the best of all standard FL1, the cost of tyres is just incidental to having those wheels. If you think outside the box, the 18" tyres aren't much more expensive then 16" tyres.

Don't forget that you'll massively reduce the value your Sport by removing the standard 18" wheels and fitting 15" or 16" wheels instead.

Like I said, sell the Sport and buy an SE instead for 1/2 the price and save a few £ on tyres.

Sorry, my post missed out that this was specifically for winter tyres. I’d be keeping the 18” wheels and fitting summer tyres when the time was right. I’d save almost £200 on buying smaller alloys and paring then with Michelin tyres which were just too expensive in 235/50/18.

I’m certainly not going to give up my heated seats and heated windscreen...

That makes more sense now.

You can fit 16" wheels from a 2001 onwards FL1, fitted with 215/70/16 winter tyres.
This will keep your 18" rims nice for summer use. Don't forget to change the spare wheel over to a matching wheel/tyre at the same time.

I don't bother with winter tyres myself, as I find my FL1 goes anywhere I need in winter with my M/S rated Cooper tyres.

I’m certainly not going to give up my heated seats and heated windscreen..

When looking for a FL1, I only shortlisted those with the winter pack installed. No heated front screen and FBH and I wasn't interested.
