Can eny one give me a pointer to the back up batterie position for the alarm before i get my hands dirty thanks

The battery for the Battery Back Up Alarm is sealed into the alarm itself. It is not replaceable, if it dies you have to get a new alarm sounder (if you can find one). The main alarm sounds through the car horns. You need to disable the back up alarm before you disconnect the car battery, which is a good test for the back up alarm if you don't do the disconnect procedure. (The main alarm will not work if the battery is disconnected).

Alarm ... back up alarm ... ??
Oooerr ...
Sounds awfully complex, what year Defender you have (or do all TD5's have such a thing) ?

Not all of them.
The sounder is behind the passenger side headlight. Seems pretty well documented you can't change the internal battery. Don't think they are available new and would be surprised to find a 2nd hand one which h has a good internal battery.
My sounder seems to have packed up even with 12volt, although it works through the normal horn.

No they are obsolete. But you might find a good used unit on Ebay, just make sure the internal battery is still okay.

Maybe better to just upgrade the alarm. As the factory one isn't that secure.

Thanks for the info didn't think it would be straightforward 👍

Same here there must be a way to Chang the sounder battery going to strip it and find out 👍

Let us know how you get on, never come across a thread where someone has been successful.
I've got a dead one in the garage, been meaning to take it apart sometime to make a dummy BBUS for the thieves to take out (fool them into thinking its ok while the working one has been relocated). Might finally get round to taking it apart this week and will post my findings.

Pretty sure the battery is encapsulated in some sort of resin or something according to other threads. Worth a look anyway.
