Air Con hasn't been blowing cold, so took it in to be filled.

Been told that there is pressure, but the compressor isn't functioning - not switching betwen high and low pressure.

They think I need a new compressor - am I right in thinking these are around 500 quid !!

It's a 2003 TD4
 
Check the electromagnetic clutch is engaging. Been known to fail. One of our number spent lots of time and money on the gas circuit when all he really lacked was the mechanical drive the the compressor.
 
Is the electromagnetic clutch a separate part? The guy that looked at it did refer to the clutch not engaging, but i assumed that it meant the whole compressor was goosed.

If you remove the drivers side plastic side cover between chassis rail and undertray (3 bolts up into chassis) you can check the clutch. The outer part of the pulley is driven by the belt and turns all the time but the centre of the pulley turns when AC is switched on.
 
When you have access you can disconnect the two pin connector from the compressor and use a DVM to measure the impedance between the two pins on the compressor connector (not the free end on the end of the wires obviously). This will give you the impedance of the solenoid. It should be less that 100 ohms, if its up in the kilo ohms or higher then this is the problem. I'm sure it can be replaced without degassing or removing the compressor.

I just changed mine after the smoke coming out from the clutch. According to the LR SC they told me Sanden compressors usually have problems. I had them change to Denso.
