Hi Guys,
I've searched through the history files and cant find the answer to my question.
OK, My aircon is no longer used or needed, as I'm transplanting the 3.9 from my discovery into my lightweight, my question is can I ditch the aircon pump and if so what part number do I need for an idler pulley, and what belt is required.

or is there some other way of removing it and still maintaining the correct tension on the serpentine belt.

I want to remove the pump because I need the extra room under the bonnet.

any help appreciated
many thanks
Steve

Hi guys again,
Any relevant help appreciated, I'm hopefully attaching a picture of my set up,
Unfortunately the last advice given wasn't too accurate,
I removed the old belt and pump, attempted to fit the new belt,
And it didn't fit, hopefully I haven't wasted my cash on the wrong belt.

Now then back to the original Q,
What do I need to be able to run the serpentine system without the aircon pump fitted.
Thanks in advance
Steve

Do you use the power steering pump? On my flat belt driven 3.9 which I've fitted to a Series 3 88" I've removed both the Aircon and power steering pumps, then relocated the belt tensioner to the power steering pump location. The belt I used was a Gates 7PK1685, the part number you need should be fairly easy to work out, 7pk is a 7 rib belt, 1685 is it's total length in mm, so get your tape measure out, and measure the length needed with the tensioner fully pulled back. If you search gates 7pk belts on ebay you'll soon get an idea of standard lengths just choose one thats as close as possible. Simples :) One thing that may be a pain though is the belt tensioner it is located for the aircon pump and so may need rotating to still be able to tension the belt, I know there are a couple positions it can be rotated to so take it off complete and have a look.

Here is the adapter that I made for the belt tensioner, I welded this together then to the mounting plate/engine lifting eye thats screwded to the engine behind the power steering pump.

And here is the completed system with no aircon or power steering pumps

Hope it helps

Cheers pal, I'll give it go,
although I do use the power steering pump, so may need to find an alternative solution.
thanks again
Steve
