Most likely loss of gas due to a leaking condensor, just done one with that problem. Fans cut in when needed, no gas = no fans:eek:

Hi - I recently recommissioned my AC and I learnt a bit abut the P38's system.

1. You should hear the ac compressor "click" in. If it doesn't (for some reason) the "text book !" mark will display on the panel after a few moments. If it is working, you should also see the center of the compressor clutch/pulley rotating.

2. The "ghost fans". My two fans in front of the condenser seem to come on when they feel like it. Unlike other cars, these fans don't seem to come on right away when the AC is switched on.

3. Pressure switches on AC receiver drier. There is some debate on here as to whether these can be changed with the system charged. On my car these can be changed with the system charged. There are schrader valves behind the switches, allowing you to remove them without loss of refrigerant. My three way switch was faulty which is how I know this. Apparently this is a common fault.

Hope this helps answer some questions.

All very good but the OP has an L322:)

Condenser fans are variable speed and will only come on song when required...i.e. when the Condenser gets warm or the Engine Coolant gets warm...

I think a trip to kwik fit for air con charge see what happens good thing about kwik fit if they dont get it running 10deg colder after recharge you dont pay.

yes, 10deg colder for a day maybe.

if theres a leak it will stop working after a few days

Problem with kwik fits claim is that if they check it and cant find a serious leak they will recharge it and it works it will be less than 10 degrees for sure then you pay. Their claim only works ( in your favour if ) if you have a serious leak which is not able to be found via a uv torch looking for the dye prior to a recharge by them or a bloody great hole or audibly hearing it with nitroen gas. If you have a minor leak that will empty the system in a few days then they win!!!!!!!! Ie a corroded pipe under a rubber clip which I have seen on numerous counts

Just a update had the car in kwik fit today put machine on, the machine does a clean and vac out of all gas/ pressure leak test goes through the the recharge also auto check for leak on system if there is a leak alarm comes on screen and it does not recharge gas and oil for lubrcation as they say if machine says leak they are not allowed to put gas in the system ? ice cold now so hopefully ok time will tell to be honest dont really put it on due to fuel usage but think need to give a run some times keep active/ hate having a gadget that does not work .

Thanks for your help all
Regards Neil

read the small print - it isnt 10C - its 10%!!

see below.....

" If we cannot improve the coolest vent temperature from your car by more than 10% when measured in degrees Celsius - then you pay nothing at all.*"
