Hi there
Vehicle is a 2001 td5 Auto.
Went to air-con shop today to find out why air-con not working and got told (and shown) that fan behind front grill is not working, shop reckons that lack of fan caused compressor to over pressurise and blow the gas out.
Now i need to check fuse's etc but in the owners handbook i cannot find a fuse listed for this fan, i can find a fuse listed for A/C blower front 10 amp, A/C 10 amp and cooling fans 40 amp, are any of these the one i should be looking at ???.

Hi, it's F5 (40A) engine bay and relay R4 on that fan's circuit(named "cooling fan") and usually the fan is stuck hence the fuse blown
 
When I had a D2 my fan got binned but didn't stop the AC working. I don't think it kicks in till it's about 24 degree's anyway.

check the fusebox's lid inside cos there's the scheme... and next time watch the electrical library for these kind of things not the owner's manual
 
Thank you, no diagram under fusebox lid but can get one from a breakers tomorrow, where do i find the "electrical library" as used the search on here but nothing shows up ???

A few times I have been able to free off a stuck fan, and then bizarrely it has worked forever after! I think lack of use bugres them. Not very scientific but there you go.
Test it by taking power to it directly if it will move by hand, then that is at least one thing eliminated.
Pain in the rear to get to though I expect.

If your 40A fuse hasn't blown with a seized motor, the chances are the problem with the aircon lies elsewhere. You can get a new fan motor here https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1408527&jsn=16 but you will need to transfer over your old fan.

The aircon problem is more likely to be one of the aircon pipes to the condenser having corroded through "under the P-clip" behind the grill letting all the gas escape. No gas, the fan never switches on for the aircon, so the fuse doesn't blow even with a seized motor.

So an update, the fuse is o.k and the relay clicks, managed to get underneath and spin the fan by hand so thats not jammed.
Could see and get my hand on the condenser pipe and not corroded or damp, system was regassed yesterday and was holding pressure so all good there.
Next step is to get the front grill of so i can check if there is power to the connector and if so i have a power probe to send power direct to the fan.
problem is the screws that hold the plastic trim bits under the headlights are rusted and i need these bits out of the way to take the grill out so need to work out how to do this ???

As mentioned it will be siezed as this part of the world never gets hot enuff to engage it. Just bin it and find and fix the issue your no aircon problem is something else.
o_O Bad advice, that fan is not just for aircon there, it's an engine saviour too in case of overheating and i doubt that in UK the temperature never exceeds 28*C

sierrafery, are you saying not to use the vehicle unless that fan is working ???, what does that fan actually do as i thought it was just for the air-con ???

See the electric fan switching points and be aware that the coolant gauge stays at the middle up to 119*C , it goes to the red zone at 120*C which is a bit late so you can drive the vehicle on a long run with let's say 115*C coolant temp without even knowing it as long as you dont have additional temp gauge... i'm sure that many HG failures could have been avoided if some people didnt neglect that fan, saved me twice untill now befeore i fitted an additional gauge which shows the real temperature, you'd be amazed to see that going hard uphill when it's warm outside, especially when towing or with heavy loaded vehicle the ECT goes often above 110*C and that fan really helps then :
