IMO better let it be cos it's there to help water separation on the dirty side of the filter element by inducing swirl into the air and hence throwing the water droplets outward ... i doubt that removing it will improve much the power while you'll gain some extra noise and humid air filter which will restrict the air flow more ... especially in UK's environment

hi people has anyone removed the air box fan turbine thing without chopping the air box about?
you mean the air box resonator ? this has nothing to do acting as a pre cleaner .its designed to quieten down induction noise only.... selling point from factory most engines have them

you will be surprised some of these swirl fan thingies can also be found inside in some vehicles inside the inner wing in the wheel arch area ... well hidden away covered up out of sight

the only gains more induction noise and if your hearing is that good you might hear the turbo sucking in air under load as the frequency in sound has changed

Cheers guys, it looks quite restrictive to be honest and a bit of induction noise would be a nice little treat

I have to disagree, that ''thing'' in the airbox bottom side which looks like a small fan/swirl is not "resonator", the resonators are usually on the intake pipe between the airbox and the turbo and the Td5 doesnt have one , here is how a "resonator" is supposed to be https://roverpartsource.com/esr3850 ... i sustain what i said in my first reply about it's purpose cos water particles are reacting to centrifugal force which is induced by that swirl... IMO removing it will increase humidity of the filter which is not ''healthy'' cos i dont think that soaked paper is good there... i can't find specific description for the Td5 about that but it's described in the image, also the design of intake resonators are mostly like a sound damping "chamber" not like a ''swirl''

i stand corrected
i have never took much notice in the bottom of the air cleaner box

yes i agree dont remove this if you live in an area with lots of rain as the air intake is inside the wheel arch area

Thanks for that.... even though this thread was not about a raised air intake(snorkel) but about something in the bottom of the td5 airbox
all good mate i used the air intake of a snorkal basically shows the same princable how to remove water droplets ... as a swirl type affect inside an air cleaner form only .i wish i was on the same page as you before commenting i will admitt i jumped in with both feet and had one of those blonde moments full of pis LOL . i was confused about a swirl fan thingy temonlogy as i never really took much notice even on my own car

but what good is a swirl if the rubber duck mouth is clogged up that many people dont squeeze every now and then . as it also spins debri even running a snorkal

i have just squeezed mine a couple of times .....note the debri on the garage floor even though i run a snorkel its wet and damp ..i think i will leave mine in place because this swirl does act as a pre cleaner

:DAll good m8, i know exactly the feeling cos it happens to mee too quite often :), unfortunately the web is full of threads about that ''separator'' removal as being an "upgrade" especially from defender owners... which might not be a problem in dry environments or in the desert but i'd not do it in UK whatsoever and even if it's removed where the climate is dry IMO the benefits would be minimal and those who say it's a huge difference in performance should study what means a pschylogical symptom named
" cognitive dissonance - the engine of self justification "
