Hi Folks,
I just need some advice on selling my beloved Defender Td5 please.
It looks like Im not allowed to advertise it on this forum as I only posted here a few times when I first bought the Landy about 10 years ago. Fair enough.
But, Ive never sold a vehicle privately before & don't really know where to start!
So, where would be the best place to advertise privately? Is Auto Trader best?.
Are there any quick sale companies who might buy it? (Im in east Kent.) I know Id lose a bit compared to selling privately but less hassle (although 'We Buy' quoted ridiculously low).
Any tips? Any scams I should be aware of?
I dont really want to sell it but need the money & my health has put the mockers on adventuring recently so am not getting good use out of it.
Any advice gratefully received. Many thanks in advance.

I've used Gumtree to sell a few motors, not had any problems
If dealing in Cash, check the notes aren't forgeries
 
Maybe contact one of the mods who maybe for a small feee will allow you to advertise it on here.

Ebay will give you large coverage, name your price and pretty much stick to it, no proof of insurance no test drives, be mean they arent your friends and you will never see them again so fcuk em, pay the sensible price or go away, no holding the car with small deposits, make it worth their while making sure they come back for the car, 500 quid will show they are serious, plus a note to say no return within 7 days means they lose the car and the money.
Lots and lots of good pictures incl engine bay and the chassis, pay for extra if you have to.
Lots or time wasting tossers/chancers out there who want everything for nowt.

Autotrader is just pants to search for motors on and drives me potty, even makes the wife swear!

We buy anycar wont have aclue on a td5 value.

Post up a pic or two and Im sure someone can give you an idea of value and mayeb even get a pm saying they are interested.

Classified ad in the local paper always works for me.
Not a lot of money, and because it is local, you don't get a lot of people ringing up from Scotland, and then saying it is too far to drive.
It is quite surprising how many people don't seem to read adverts before phoning.

Agree with most of that, except the test drives. I wouldn't buy any car without a test drive, especially a landrover.

And I am not convinced that LZ is a good place to sell a vehicle. Most of the regulars won't want to pay much.
 
Autotrader will give you a wider circulation and should get your advert noticed by a lot of potential buyers and you can update the advert if required and add more photos.
Dont let anyone test drive your landy without insurance and be in the car with them during the test drive.
If anyone asks to come and view it ask them to bring proof of insurance with them if they want to test drive it, otherwise you are better off driving it with them as a passenger, most people will only be covered for 3rd party insurance to drive other cars on there own car policy.
If a sale is agreed the safest way to exchange any money is to ask the buyer to go with you to your bank and deposit any cash into your account and hand over the documents there after the cash has been accepted, if they pay by cheque ensure it clears and the money is in your account before you part with anything, do not accept bank drafts they can be forged. Alway ensure the money is in your account before parting with anything whichever payment option you go for.
Remember that the purchaser will have to tax the landy before driving it away as you cannot leave the tax on anymore and you have to claim a refund for any full months tax remaining.
Ensure you both fill out the log book before they drive away, do not post date it so they can drive with your tax as you will get any speeding or parking tickets.

Wider circulation doesn't always translate into sales. Few people will drive more than a hundred miles to buy a car, less in the case of a cheap old car.

Agree completely about not handing over the car until you have cash or a cleared cheque.
 
But lots of "potential" buyers, but even locally there will be lots of potential buyers who look through Autotrader. Nothing stopping anyone placing the same advert in other places like Gumtree and ebay as well.

Fully agree with this. We only live about 30 miles away from the conurbation of Newcastle Upon Tyne. We're in a small village in Northumberland. It is very difficult to get people to travel that far to look at a car. You have to put them up for an attractive amount less than it's worth. It might be different if I was selling a defender as they are 'sought after' at the moment. I've only sold standard cars from here.

I did try to contact the mods here a couple of times using 'contact' thingy but no replies. Is there someone in particular I could send a p.m?
I will have a read of gumtree, ebay, autotrader etc. & do some ruminating. Need to get her washed & take loads of photos. Good idea to include engine bay & chasis.

There isn't a way to bypass the selling rules and here is probably not the best place anyway.

If you want to chance it and see what it'll go for use fleabay.

If you know what you want for it use bumtree.

Autotrader is rubbish and crashes on me so frequently I lost interest years ago

I lived in West Cornwall, right down nearly at Land's End, for over twenty years, during which time I sold quite a few cars, and several Series landrovers. Nobody ever came from further than Bodmin, about 50 miles away, to look at one.
Several of my friends have sold Defenders in the same area, no one ever comes from the other side of Exeter. And very few from there.

Yup. Local-ish might be best bet then.
Thank you again for all the advice. Im quite sad to be leaving the landy fraternity. I will miss waving at other drivers! But needs must when the devil vomits on your eiderdown. Head not heart on this one.
Maybe one day i can return to the fold. :( bye for now.

No need to leave LZ. Plenty on the forum without Landrovers, including myself.
 
And the most important thing as soon as it sells and I mean as soon as you see it leaving your sight

CANCEL YOUR INSURANCE

Do not put this off, do it right away, there are horror stories about people not cancelling the insurance as it only had a week left to run, the new owner didnt have insurance and the vehicle was involved in a serious/fatal bump, guess who was liable as the vehicle was still covered by a policy of insurance.
 
its the f witts do my head in wanting thousands of pics the last one I sent him a pic of my greyhound having a dump
