Series2aMNE

Hi All,

Glad to be part of this forum. This is my first post and hope to make many more in the future.

I have been in discussion for a while with the owner of the Series 2a, diesel, 1968, and would like opinion for someone more experienced, to tell me if its reasonable purchase.

Car has been for last two years mainly parked in the garden, under the tree, badly painted couple of years ago and had engine completely restored. Owner just said clutch is leaking and there are signs of the rust on the belly, but he say surface rust only. From the photos I see signs of rust protruding on the bonnet and also interior need to be replaced completely. For the last two years only been driven through the yard.

Main concern is that i live in Montenegro and parts are really hard to come by. If the bulkhead is bad and chassis needs replacement, this will be very hard to procure. On the other hand, Series 2a is really hard to come by around these parts and even when there is one for sale, it commands much bigger price.

Owner is asking 1,500 EUR for it.

What do you guys think? Is the price reasonable, should I get it or chase something better.

Intention is to start restoration as soon as i get it, starting from the chassis.

Kind regards,
Nino

It looks a bit rough, and badly modified in several areas, particularly the interior.
So quite a lot needs doing to restore any value as a classic vehicle that it might have.
Also, as there are no pictures of the chassis, and limited views of the bulkhead, it is not possible to give an opinion on those.

In Britain, that would probably fetch that money easily, but the prices are being driven largely by the exemption of vehicles over 40 years old from various kinds of environmental and road safety legislation.
As I have no idea what legislative and other pressures apply to such vehicles in Montenegro, I am unable to give much of an idea as to whether that is good value over there.

You and/
or someone who knows old vehicles need to see the Landy in person and have a very good look at it.

Spend your time looking at the chassis. Also check the gearbox and transfer box and make sure it is drivable. Welding does not need parts so it you have a good welder (I'm sure there are some in Montenegro) then you can fix the bulkhead and chassis. You will almost certainley have to rebuild the brakes as it has not been used for a while, same with clutch hydraulics, but parts are cheap and if you only buy the seals then post is cheap too. Would I buy it? Yes so long as it can be started and driven a few meters to check the engine runs and it goes through the gears.

It will cost you a fortune. They all cost you a fortune. You will hate it and love it three times a day and it will continue to cost you a fortune. It will only break down when you really need it and fall to pieces if there is an emergency. Then it will cost you some more.

Buy it. You will never regret it. :D

Montenegro is one of the few places I wish I had visited but never went. Love the photos, the wild trout, the lack of an industrial revolution. An unspoilt gem.

Perhaps one day

They don't have to cost you a fortune, but they are old and things do wear out, break etc but everything is fixable if the parts are available to you.
It's a shame it doesn't have the correct steering wheel, you might find the smaller replacement a bit heavy going.
Check the chassis for rot, check the bulkhead under those wooden panels. Make sure it drives through the gears without nasty noises and that high/low ratio works
