I am thinking about getting a set of 15" steel wheels for my 2001 freelander to use when I take it off road. I need some advice as I have heard that you need to make sure the wheels are the correct ones as they were changed slightly in 2000-2001 to accomodate bigger brakes or something.

Does anyone know anything about this and the part numbers for the two different types.

Im confused.

Thanks

You'll just need to make sure the wheels you buy are from a newer car than yours and not the other way around.

Thanks longdog, hopefully that is the case. I have just won 4 freelander steel wheels on ebay. Picking them up on friday.

Anyone suggest the best size of M/T tyres to put on, bearing in mind a small budget?

Thanks

To confirm Longdog is correct all steels fit all FL1

215/80/15 is normal choice for off road use...colways are cheap

Does anyone know what the largest tyres you can fit on the 15" steel rims? Was hoping that some mud terrain tyres may increase my ride height a little.

Thanks for the advice. While lloking for tyres, i found a online tool that can work out the overal size of you wheel when you put in the tyre size.

So for the 225/55 R17's that I have on as standard = 26.74" (679.30mm)

and for the recommended 215/80 R15s = 28.54" (725mm)

So thinking about it, i get a 1" lift by fitting these tyres on my 15" steels. Better than nothing.

Thanks for the advice.

Hi guys. Have got my steel wheels and now about to put some rubber on them. The only tyres i have found 215/80 R15 Mud terrain are 'Insa Turbo Sahara MT Remoulds' and 'Bronco Diamond Back'.

I read a review on the Bronco's and it was said that they were really good but ate half shafts. Now would this cause a problem on a freelander? I dont know. Any advice on these two tyre chaoices would be great.

Half shaft thing is probably a reference to Series Landrovers. They had a tendency to snap half shafts anyway whatever tyres were fitted! :D

The diamond back is an excellent tyre but a bit of overkill if you ask me very noisey and when tread is included has profile more like 215/90/15...I have used them on my V6 and they will initially rub rear of front wheel arches when on 3/4 lock(soon sorts itself by wearing a couple of mm off arch).....Personally wouldnt bother with them again. Dont expect more than about 10k miles from them

Popular choices are Colway MT or AT cheap and cheerful although I dont think they are still made they often come up on eblag for about a £10-£15 each....Normally good for 20K

BFGoodrich also do 215/80/15 excellent tyre long lasting but a bit expensive to trash off road.
