Hi all,
Need a little advice, apologies for the long story!
Yesterday I took part on a land rover experience adventure drive at Eastnor as part of the lr show there. The experience was amazing, although it was by a long way the most challenging off roading I've driven yet (out of 10 vehicles, 5 needed towing out, 2 broke halfshafts and i overheated).
Towards the end of the session my expansion tank ****ed itself and all my coolant steamed out of the cap- the temperature guage was raised, but not yet at the 3/4 and a while away from the red. Anyway I parked it and turned it off to cool. It did start after this and I was advised to trundle it back to the camp (about half a mile) As I did this is wasn't happy and sounded like a bag of nails...
Anyway, i let it cool and refilled the coolant system with water and let it settle, then refilled it again. checked the oil (hadn't lost any), and cleaned the mud off the ignition components before reassembling with a healthy dose of wd40. Following this it started on half a turn and sounded like it's old self. I drove 5 miles to a jetwash and cleaned all the crud out of the radiator, and cleaned the engine a little.
I carefully drove home (130 miles), stopping every half an hour to check the water level, which didn't budge.
The temperature also remained consistent throughout.
However...it is possible I'm being massively over-sensitive, but...it does feel *slightly* less powerful and *slightly* noisier.
I was wondering if i need to panic that I've done lasting damage to the engine? I'm going to replace the coolant and oil, as well as the air filter, which is a little muddy now, but im worried these engines don't like getting hot and i've warped something (cylinder heads etc).
It was a great experience, but i wouldn't have taken part if I'd have known how tough it would be....paying the price worrying now.
Anyway, all advice and micky-taking welcome.
Steve
