Just a quick question I've been mulling over is, is there anything I should do to the engine whilst it's out and on the bench. I have ported and polished old ford engine heads in the past with good results as well as re grinding the valves back in, but are these engines going to benifit from anything like that or am I best just giving it a clean and a paint and putting it back in.
Also is there anything else anyone would do whilst it's out. :D

Hi
Was there anything wrong with it when you removed it?

Once you start taking it to bits there are a few things you should check because you may as well!

Im about to start stripping mine but thats because it needs the head welded, so while its apart ill be doing the following:

Checking big ends for wear/ovality
Renewing Big end bearings
Checking conrods
Poss checking piston clearances
Checking camshaft bearing clearances
Poss checking injectors
Removing all valves, checking for worn guides, lapping in valves, new oil seals.

I dont plan on modifying anything just checking and renewing where required.

Worth bearing in mind that even if you just replace the bits you have to replace, head gasket, head bolts, big ends and bolts, you will still be looking at £250 to £300 just for the bits and gaskets sets etc.

So unless you actually have a known fault I probably wouldnt bother taking it apart.

Where in Beds are you? Im in Biggleswade.

Hi Mark. Cheers for all that info. I did plan on just changing the head gasket, not that it's gone but as I'm doing a complete rebuild theres not much point doing all that only for the head gasket going a couple of weeks after putting it back on the road. 😂

Hi. I start stripping the engine down this coming weekend. Block is staying in the car as I really dont want to pull the whole thing out.

Was there a problem with yours? I try to apply "if it aint broke dont fix it" rule whenever I can!

I'm doing a chassis swap so I thought whilst the engine is out might as well Do anything that needs doing to the engine.
Got to put a clutch in too 👍
