After the dodgy weather this weekend we've got a tree down across a footpath up at my mum's place. Being the helpful chap I am I volunteered to go cut it up and move it, so loaded up the Landy with various saws and set off through the woods and there I stayed for two hours stuck in a massive quagmire of butter-like mud.

I tried to winch myself out with my hand winch, but the rope around the front bumper snapped and it's knocked my shin quite badly. I've got the standard type of front bumper and just had the rope wrapped around it, which leaves it on a fairly sharp point. What would be the ideal towing point to add to the bumper?
 
Yep jate rings, I can take a photo of them on mine so you know what to get.

Don't be tempted to use the existing tow eyes for recovery as they aren't meant for that and will pull out
 
I've been considering making a bumper out of 5mm plate, but I've not got any plate to play with at the moment. For the mean time I'll get some jate rings. I've got a meaty bruise coming through and have certainly learned my lesson.

Okay mate will do it in an hour or so, just watching lady and the tramp with a poorly 3 year old lol
 
Forged jate rings. Only need to worry about higher recovery points if you start doing some serious mud-plugging.
 
Right well I ended up busy.

Here is a forged jate ring and how it fits on the front chassis leg.

Personally I am not a great fan of Jate-Rings and prefer a pair of the old style that sit above the bumper (see photo).
They are still chassis mounted but save the need to go scrabbling around in the gloop if you haven't attached a bridle before you set off. Also they don't interfere with a steering guard (if you have one fitted) but they are no good if you have an air-con grill.
Horses for courses and all that but would be ideal for the type of use mentioned.

Yeah either type would work, yours look more 'classic' if you see what I mean - I *think* jate rings were made for the army and the ones you have are original Land Rover aren't they?

I fit a bridle prior to going in the gloop lol just a 2m strop, I secure it with the central pin on my mil bumper
 
I made my own bumper .. well, modified a winchtray bumper into a heavy duty and simply added a tow-ball/pin thing .. ;)
