Can anyone advise me on the legalities of fitting seats to my 90. There are many seats available out there but the legalities are a mystery to me.
My 90 (County) is registered as a 'Light Goods Vehicle' and currently has no seats in the back. I need to fit a couple of fold-up seats to carry people as I guess I shouldn't be doing it as I am. I also guess that any seats will have to have appropriately certificated/rated seat belts as well?

I know I will have to inform my insurers as this is a mod but what about the DVLA?

It will still be a van as there are no windows (other than the long narrow roof lights) down the sides but will the DVLA be interested?

Any help would be gratefully received.
 
i added seats in the back of mine to replace the bench seat that was there.

I havnt told anyone or changed anything on V5.

Not sure if i need to though
 
It will affect your insurance, you might be surprised how much!

Have to tell them though or can be voided. Put a search in, there's a few post bout it I recall. Looked into it myself but too costly for now.
 
BearDY89 you must tell your insurers or risk voiding your insurance completely. There is a young man in Luton who's Corsa was written off. When the assessor spotted that he had fitted alloy wheels but not told them they flatly refused to compensate him. The car was on HP and he is still paying for it despite not having it any more:(
 
As chunky says, loads of threads

Easy to do, but DVLA and Insurance are a must do.

Simplest is side facing fold up seats or benches - can use lap belts or nothing (but can't use for young kids). Conventional over the shoulder seat belts don't work!

Can also but in front facing benches or single seats (folding or fixed) with lap and diagonal belts.

Make sure you use spreader plates where you bolt through!
 
I did do a search and found that apparently seat belts are not mandatory for inward fitting seats. This sounds great to me.
Thanks Station House. Benches appear simplest for my needs (Occasional passenger/s, dog and shotguns) and thanks for the 'top tip for spreader plates.
 
a mate stuck 2 folding ones in his 90 in the back, his insurance didnt change at all when he notified them, seatbelts arent fitted as they wernt fitted in side facing seats as standard back then i dont think
 
Thanks Mikey. I'm looking for clues with regard to seat belts from MOT lists. Mines a 02' 90 so I may have to invest in lap belts.
 
i can see it, yeah that might need looking into, also the regs on when the mandatory forward facing seats came into play.
 
ive got one bench seat going if youre going to buy some.

Its not brand new but i rubbed it all down and repainted it. and the cushions are in very good condition.

Insurance is aware its 4 seats but didnt update the V5 maybe i will do that at some point.

I wondered why my 1995 90 had seats but no belts, I thought they'd been retro fitted but they may be original if belts weren't required
 
I have a single foldable seat in the rear of my 90> when i told my insurance company they added it as an interior mod but it had to have a seat belt fitted. It was only "20 extra on the insurance.
 
My insurance asked how many seats and how many seatbelts, I said 6 and 2 as it has a cubby box, if I add belts surely that just makes it safer so how can they charge me more
