Because they have a lot of issues that involve lottsa money or lottsa time. If you have ample amounts of either one, it may be the car for you.

Crazy electronics, slipped cylinder liners (prevalent on the the 4.6 because of over boring original block) failed head gaskets causing bad overheating, EAS problems due to old bags, dodgy sensors and worn compressors and BECM issues that cause problems like getting locked out and having the the starter immobilized.

Now, all these problems can be fixed, but it takes the right tools, diagnostic equipment and the such, and a hearty mechanical attitude. If you don't like wrenching, then you WILL pay some one else to do it.

Areyou in the USA if you are look at kelly blue book for price. Me and WSR are american and what I see and sounds like he see also is that is about 10-12k under valued and the owner Knows it is a piece of **** and you are going to get it dumped on you.

You asked a question and if you don't like the answer then don't ask the question then. you asked for help and help is what you got. We threw a drowning man a rope and you are questioning the rope:doh:

To be fair FT, there are a lot of them on the road, especially in my AO. I recently stopped and looked a '96 for $4500. It had funky paint on the hood, but all else looked fine and sported a coil conversion. It was wet underneath (of course) but not unacceptable. The thing is, you never know what your getting for sure with any used car. We happen to know some of the the things that can go wrong with these cars.

Thing is you can get a good one. Or make a funky one work, if you want to.

Hell, I drive my 93 like a rice burner. Get in it and drive. It's had glitches (was crawling around underneath him today because of a muffler rattling) but, because I'm dense enough to try to keep the thing going, my novice Landy skills and this forum allow me to do that.

I knew nothing about Land Rovers until mine followed me home. At least babytoes has the sense to ask questions before he commits to one.

i know i just love how it looks at is hard to hear bad news when you want something based on all the wrong reasons.

I wouldnt say I am wealthy by any means maybe $500+ monthly surplus that usually gets spent on dumb stuff - not much a of a saver - ive changed brake pads, rotors and thats about it. kinda helped a guy change a intank fuel pump once and saw how easy it was. he charged me $20 and a case of beer. lol

Here in michigan a nice 2000 model yr will be in the 15K price. where are you then and check kelly blue book.

They are a nice looking car. How far are you from a Land Rover dealer have a look at there lot and get a idea what prices are. Check out the parts availability both used and new ask then what does ahead gasket job cost etc
And next how good are you with wrenches and doing the repairs your self? That would be one of the most important issue so far

looking at cars.com i found several of range rovers around that year and amount of miles for around 5-7k which shocked me

my car only books for 7k well did 6 mos ago mainly because it has 64k miles

wrenches and small repairs i could do but removing an engine or transmission wouldn't happen

2hrs from a rover dealer i am in pikeville kentucky very rural so there is a lot of car savy ppl

its odd ive looked at like 20 free car fax reports on rovers ranging from 99-2001 and only 1 had a engine replaced and 1 had a gasket replaced

wouldnt this engine trouble shine through on these carfax reports? granted its only 20 cars in a sea of thousands

well at least it aint sat on its arse. That means the air bags are about to fail.....

My esteemed countryman mean the rear air suspension, it's not sagging so the air bags, are hopefully ok :D

@goon huh?
think what he means is it at its stage in life for just about most things to go wrong. The most expensive stuff, and at the mileage for slipped liners it is a aluminum enginer block and the liners do slip and the block does crack.

If james martin makes a apperance listen to him very carefully. As he is the MAN for technical .motor, trans, the drive line stuff

Yes!

well I thought you all should know I am going to trade for it anyway if it drives decent going to really inspect the engine sound and visually - heavily scan the transmission for faults - so if this guy approves my car better be ready to welcome me to the family - i welcome repairs and dare them to surface :)

you guys better start looking for me a 2000 4.6 engine - might need it - don't i get a welcome package here? like spare parts for my future rover

It's a disease for sure. I think Land Rover's motto should be "An Acquired Taste."

Good luck and keep us informed.
