I was flying along the German Autobahn on Sunday (a section with no speed limit) when the plastic outer cover of the passenger side A-pillar detached itself and vanished. At first I thought a bird had hit the car but but after stopping in a lay-by I noticed the missing part. It had bounced down the side of the car but miraculously hadn't scratched the paintwork. Underneath I could see that it had been stuck on with what looks like windscreen sealant instead of the plastic plugs that plug into the metalwork, as visible in these photos. I knew the windscreen had been replaced by the previous owner and my local stealer says it's symptomatic of work done by a non-LR dealer who didn't have the correct fittings at hand. They just stick the cover back with the same sealant used to seal the windscreen. The stealer has ordered a new part for 50EUR so it's not the end of the world. But I'd say if you get a new screen fitted, make sure they refit the A-pillar covers properly :)

yep, thats the cheap ass way of getting a screen fitted. friend of mine had a 5 turbo back in the day. screen fell out forward 6 months later when braking hard. new pants please!
 
I tried to replace my windscreen upper finisher the other week, there was a nasty bend and ripple in it that I thought was causing loads of wind noise.

Because some previous fitter had basically glued the whole lot down, windscreen, finisher, and drain channel, I ended up having to cut it off with a stanley knife. Then to get the correct LR clips to fit I had to tease out all the solid mastic from the studs and it took effin ages.

I've now got a crack in my windscreen and want it replaced but daren't call Autoglass in case the bodge it again.

Do you think the fitter would mind if I stood over him watching him work with the RAVE manual in one hand and the correct clips, finishers and trim in the other?

why not? i do that with anyone coming to work on anything. i always watch them. kind of intimidates them to do it properly. and if they damage something i have proof it was them and not me.

Just had mine replaced by auto glass and they cancelled my first appointment as land rover hadn't sent the finisher clips, when they did it I was at work, and wife give him key, he rang to say the earth post for the heated screen was knackered, so he left all the new clips etc, I fixed the problem then put it back together meself

Well that sounds more promising.

To be honest I thought I'd just remove the side and upper finishers myself and leave a print-out of the RAVE instructions on the drivers seat and ask him to use them.
 
My P38 screen was changed by Autoglass recently. When I booked it in they asked if I could bring it to the depot as they could do a better job when fully under cover. When I arrived the fitter, who seemed very pleased with himself, showed me he had a new screen, a new upper trim and a big bag of new trim clips for the top, sides and bottom trims. So some places do know what needs doing, it's not just the glass that needs changing. Mind you, the same company sent a fitter to do my Freelander a couple of years ago, and he broke the end off the the left lower plastic scuttle (the large one at the base of the windscreen where the wiper arms go through) and attempted to stick it back together with windscren adhesive and hide the fact he'd broken it. I was ****ed at him for that. They had to order a new one and fit it a few days later.
